“Sorry,” Matt said.
“I have a hearing today, remember?” Tyler said with a roll of his eyes.
“What? Do you have to miss school?” Matt asked.
“No, it’s after school.”
“What a way to end the year,” Jon-Allen said, shaking his head.
Matt felt very serious all of a sudden. “What do you think will happen?”
“I don’t know,” Tyler said.
“Will Tyler get moved, Auntie?” Matt asked.
“I don’t know, honey. He might go back to his mother.”
Jon-Allen gasped. “Really?”
“Yeah. She’s doing a lot better,” Tyler said. “She did rehab and everything.”
“Good luck,” Jon-Allen said.
“Yeah, no kidding.” An uncomfortable feeling prickled through Matt’s body. He realized he was actually jealous of Tyler.
Jon-Allen’s shoulders slumped and Matt knew he was thinking about his mom. Matt sighed. His own mom and dad could never come get him.
He remembered Ash, though, and his spirits lifted.
After breakfast, as they all walked to the bus, Jon-Allen pulled Matt off to the side.
