Xavier arrived at the border of his city and was stopped by a group of security at the entrance. He groaned and rolled down the glass of his car as one of them knocked on it.
"Where are you going, boy?" one of them inquired, resting his hand on his car.
"I am going out of town to pursue my dreams." Xavier replied, rolling his eyes.
"You can’t go, you will have to reverse your car." the security said and Xavier saw a truck drive past the border and screwed up his face.
"Why should I? I am going out." Xavier replied rudely.
"You should learn to respect your elders, young man; haven't you heard the mayor say no one can leave the city; we're trying to keep the population stable?" the security said. Xavier’s eyes widened; he couldn’t believe the mayor was still passing out ridiculous rules in the city because of his selfish motives.
"What happened to the population?" Xavier inquired.
"We did a population census recently and the city is falling apart. A lot of people have moved out of the city and migrated to somewhere else." the man replied. Xavier sighed because that was what he was going to do.
"Huh, so that means I can’t go out, right?" Xavier asked.
"Yes," he replied.
"Then why did you allow that truck to go out without blocking his path?" Xavier asked, looking at the huge barrels they used to block the road.
"That is an export truck," the man said.
"Okay, I will reverse my car." Xavier said, in a sad tone, and fired the engine. He started reversing with the help of the cop. He stared at the barrel and imagined Amber’s face.
"I don’t know if she has moved on or gotten married to Mason, but I want to see her. That is the push I needed if I have to settle for someone else." He thought and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. He increased the speed of the car and nearly hit the cops standing behind the barrels as he knocked over the barrels and drove across the border at great speed.
He looked at the side mirror and smiled as he spotted the cops yelling and some of them on the floor.
"You all don’t need to hate me; I’m never coming back to this city." He thought, and reduced the speed of his car, and dialed Amber’s number.
Amber halted in front of the testing room and started looking for the doorknob. When another employee ran over to her and used his card to open the door, she rushed inside with him and he tried to push her out.
"Who are you?" he asked bluntly.
"I am in this department. I forgot my card at home." she said, pointing at the ID on her chest. He glanced at it and walked away. Amber opened her eyes wide in surprise as she saw millions of the perfumes in the room being tested by the employees. She didn’t watch her step and bumped into an employee who was making sure the perfume was bringing out flames.
"Hey! Watch it." the guy yelled because the flames nearly touched his partner.
"I am sorry." she apologized and stood beside him. All the employees were busy in their own fields. The scent of the perfume was in the air. It was the only air they were breathing. Some of them were putting on face masks.
"How can someone create a large quantity of fake perfume that they want to use to frame me?" she thought, clenching her fist when one of the employees tapped her on the shoulder.
"What are you doing standing there? Come help with this perfume; it doesn’t smell good." One of them said. She took it from her and sniffed it. The scent was off and it made her want to puke. She scrunched her face and held her nose.
"There must be an ingredient missing in it. You know, the machines are not perfect." The employee remarked, sniffing another perfume. Amber looked around and saw a trash can. She stepped on it and tossed the perfume inside, only to find out that there were other perfumes inside.
She assisted the employee in identifying the odd ones and stared at her wristwatch. It was 7:00 pm and the employees hadn’t talked about how they were going to go home. They were still working hard as their sweat filled the air. Amber wrinkled her nose and decided to ask one of the employees about it.
"It's time to go home. Night shift, do your thing!" said one of the speakers in the room.
"That is not a business language." Amber muttered to herself, and started watching all the employees as they took off their aprons and started walking out of the room.
"I am going home, I will work the night shift tomorrow." the employee she was working with told her and patted her on the shoulder before walking away. Amber sighed as there were only a few employees remaining in the room and the machine was bringing out a few perfumes.
She removed her apron as her phone started vibrating in her pocket. She strolled out of the room and picked up the call without looking at the caller. She waited to hear the person’s voice.
"Hello babydoll, how are you?" Xavier asked, in a soft tone. Her phone nearly slipped out of her hand. She thought she had blocked his number along with Mason’s. He continued talking, telling her how much he missed her, but it only made her want to cry. Because he reminded her of Mason, she rested on the wall staring into thin air, so the tears in her eyes striving to come out wouldn’t fall.
"Hello babydoll, I am talking here." Xavier ranted when he realized she wasn’t responding to what he was saying.
"Say something," he stated. She took a deep breath.
"It’s good to hear your voice. How have you been?" she muttered. Xavier was overwhelmed with joy.
"I am alright. I almost thought you stopped using this number because it has been a long time since I contacted you. I was busy with my own dreams," he said.
"I was also busy with my dreams," she replied, clutching her chest.
"Have you managed to fulfill your dream?" he asked.
"Um, yes," she said flatly.
"I have achieved all my goals, but there is one I still haven’t managed to fulfill," he said.
"What’s that?" Amber asked curiously.
"That last goal is to see you. Where are you? I think I am in your city." Xavier said.
"Don’t come to me, I don’t wanna see you." Amber said and attempted to hang up.
"Wait!" Xavier yelled, as if he knew that she wanted to hang up.
"I am stuck in the middle of nowhere I need your house address," he said.
"Where are you?" she asked with a frown.
"I am in the city. I found your personal information at the university, but I don’t know where you live." he said.
She heaved a sigh and blurted out her address and hung up immediately.
"What is wrong with him? Why does he want to see me all of a sudden?" She thought and started walking down the hallway. She wanted to look for Lucas and get out of there. They had wasted a lot of time in the company.
She sighted a room with a golden door and stood in front of it. She knocked on the door, but no one answered. She clutched the doorknob and walked into the room. There was no one in the large office that had a lot of perfumes laying across the desk.
"This must be the boss’s office." She said and looked around. She started hearing the sounds of water coming from the door on the side.
"Maybe he is in there," she concluded and sat on his chair. She took out her flash drive and shoved it into his laptop, copying all the information about the new perfume on her flash drive. She came across an open tab in his browser and glanced at it.
He was the one that responded to the people complaining about the perfume. She began hearing thunderous footsteps and started typing as fast as she could to defend her company and place the blame on his company.
She slowly raised her head as she saw a figure beside her. She jerked her head to look at the person. He was an old man with a shabby beard, and his shirt was soaked from the water that was dripping down his hair.
"What are you doing here? You can’t be here!" He yelled, trying to take his computer away from her. He grasped the monitor, and she dragged it with him and pressed publish. She let go of the monitor and he staggered backward with it.
Amber rose from the chair and started trying to run out of the house when he followed her.
"Hey! Stop there. What did you do?" He yelled, running after her. He halted and ran back to ring the alarm. Amber started running down the hallway and shoved the flash drive in her pocket.
"If you see a girl wearing a yellow outfit, don’t let her leave this company," Amber heard the voice of the man coming from speakers that were stationed in the hallway.
She took out her phone and called Lucas, but his phone was switched off. In the blink of an eye, a group of security started chasing her. She ran out of the company and got into her car. She hid in her car. The security guards ran past her car and scattered in different directions.
Lucas made sure he captured the fake chemicals on camera and the faces of the men that were delivering them. He walked out of the department along with the other employees who weren’t on the night shift. He stared at his wrist watch and yawned, clutching his stomach.
"I am so hungry. These people are robots. How can someone work for a long time without being fed?" He whined and looked around. He walked to the testing department, but he didn’t see Amber.
"Catch the girl in the yellow dress," he heard a voice from the speaker.
"Huh, Amber is wearing a yellow dress." He thought, stroking his chin, and started running to the entrance of the company. He walked to the driveway and clutched the car, but it was locked from the inside. He walked around the car and looked inside all the windows, where he saw Amber’s hair. He banged on the glass. She sat up and stared at him in shock.
"Open the door," he said, using sign language. Amber opened the door of the car and he rested his hand on the door, staring at her.
"Why are you hiding in your car? Aren’t you the one that said we should come and spy on them?" he inquired, glaring at her.
She pulled him into the car and shut the door, "Let’s get out of here. I have managed to get some information and set things right." She said her phone started beeping with notifications and messages from her assistant.
"Start the car, the security is after me." She said, hitting him lightly on the shoulder, he crossed over to the front seat of the car and fired the engine, driving out of the driveway, He halted at the gate and waited for the security guards to open it. Amber stared at the notification and smiled as the customer started attacking the company.
She picked up the incoming call from her assistant.
"Your lawyer talked to the agents and they left without searching the computers of all the employees. She had told them to get a search warrant, and there had been an angry mop in front of the company since this morning, preventing us from leaving the building," he said.
"That means you are still in the company?" Amber asked.
"It's not just me; they're threatening to end our lives if we go outside." The cops are outside, but they can’t marshal the deadly crowd. It’s madness here. I think they don’t have houses," the assistant said, looking out the window.
"Oh my god, they have started leaving," he said.
"Really?" Amber asked.
"Yes, they are looking at the phones and leaving one after the other. It is as if they are going somewhere else." He said.
"That’s a good thing." Amber said and hung up. She smiled, putting her phone close to her chest. Lucas stared at her in the front rearview mirror and a smile curved on his lips.
Mason finished talking to his spy, who had told him he wouldn’t be able to leave the city where he had found Amber.
"She is still single. That means she has been waiting for me all along." he muttered to himself, smiling endlessly.
"She is still single!!" he yelled with a lot of happiness in his voice and dragged his blanket. He tossed it to the floor and ran to the window, looking at himself in the mirror.
"I will have to abduct her." he muttered to himself and took out his divorce agreement from the drawer, glancing at it.
"She will probably faint again, or is she faking it?" he thought, and dropped it on the counter.
"I think I should lay low for now," he said, and grasped his jug to get water, but it was empty. He walked out of his room to refill his jug when he heard a loud noise coming from Lily’s room. He opened the door and saw her laying on the floor with an empty can of painkillers beside her. The jug fell from his hand, and he ran to her on the floor.
"Lily!!" he yelled, tapping her face. He couldn’t believe she tried to kill herself because of the way he was treating her.
"What’s wrong with you? Why would you try to end your own life!" He yelled at the top of his lungs and carried her to his room, dropping her on the bed and opening his briefcase to look for a medicine that would reverse the overdose. He took a naloxone and lifted her head onto the bed, inserting the medication into her mouth. He looked around the room for water and left her on the bed to get water.
He ran into the room with the water and poured it into her mouth.
"Why would you do such a thing, is suicide the only option? your parents will kill him if they find out you try to do such a despicable thing." Mason whined, staring at her. She gulped down the medicine. He placed her on the bed and covered her with the duvet. He closed his briefcase and walked to the window.
"Amber, I miss you, but this time it seems we can’t be together. Maybe we are just star-crossed lovers." He said he grabbed a bottle of alcohol and started drinking it slowly to ease his depression
