Dustin turned, stunned, “We were only joking—”

“We do not joke about that.” Nicolae’s tone left no room for discussion. “‘Suko is asking on you,” Nicolae said, thumbing towards the curtain. “We will stay out front until you return.”

For a long moment Christina looked like she was going to refuse. Then she got up with a snort and walked past Nicolae with a definitive switch of hips. At the curtain she paused, frowning. “You know, you put too much credence in the words of hypocrites. By not speaking of it, you give it power.”

“It is a powerful thing,” Nicolae hissed over his shoulder.
