Djong (also called jong, jung,,,, or junk) is an ancient type of sailing ship originating from Java and was used in general by Javanese and Malay sailors. The word was and is now spelled "jong" in its native language, the spelling of "djing" is a Dutch colonial romanization. Djong is used mainly as a passenger ship and cargo ship, reaching the Atlantic Ocean in ancient times. Average payload weights are from 40 to 2000 dead tons, with an average deadweight of 1200–1400 tons during the Majapahit era.
Javanese kingdoms such as Majapahit, Demak Sultanate, and Kalinyamat Sultanate used this type of ship as a warship, but it was still dominant as a transport ship. Mataram Sultanate usually used jong as a carrier. merchant ships are not warships.
