After leaving Haruka's house, Aki made his way toward the Raikage's office, anticipation bubbling within him. He was eager for a new mission—preferably an A-rank this time.
Despite being a Chunin, Aki had been performing above his rank for some time now, often accompanying Jonin on higher-level missions and proving his prowess repeatedly.
The sun hung high over Kumogakure, casting sharp shadows across the village's distinctive architecture. Aki navigated through the bustling streets with ease, his mind wandering back to his earlier missions.
Initially, his assignments were meant to get him used to the grim reality of a shinobi's life, to steel his nerves, and to sharpen his skills (by killing enemies).
Arriving at the Raikage's office, Aki was informed that Ay was occupied and would see him shortly. He settled into the waiting area. An hour passed before the doors to Ay's office finally swung open.
"Aki, come in," Ay's deep voice resonated from within.
Aki straightened up and walked confidently into the office. The Raikage sat behind his imposing desk, his muscular frame dominating the room.
"Ready for a mission, Aki?" Ay asked, his voice tinged with a teasing tone. "I've got an A-rank assignment just for you."
Aki's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really? An A-rank mission?"
Ay chuckled at the young shinobi's enthusiasm. "Yes, you've proven yourself capable in the past few months."
As if on cue, the office door opened, and two figures entered. The first was instantly recognizable—Yugito Nii, the Two-Tails Jinchuriki. Her long, straight blonde hair was tied back neatly, and her piercing eyes exuded confidence and strength. She wore the standard Kumogakure attire, with a hint of personal flair that matched her formidable reputation.
The second figure was a man Aki hadn't met before. He bore a striking resemblance to Iruka Umino from Konoha but had the distinct dark skin common among Kumogakure natives. His black hair was pulled back into a short ponytail, and a calm, friendly expression rested on his face.
"Aki, meet your teammates for this mission," Ay announced, gesturing towards the newcomers.
The man stepped forward first, offering a polite nod. "Hey there, I'm Haruto," he introduced himself, his voice smooth and composed. "Looking forward to working with you."
Aki returned the nod with a slight bow. "Nice to meet you, Haruto-senpai."
Yugito regarded Aki with a steady gaze before offering a brief nod. "Yugito Nii," she stated simply, her voice cool and measured.
"It's an honor to work with you, Yugito-senpai."
Aki remembered Yugito as a battle maiden, from the little amount of screentime she had in the series. Meeting her only affirmed that view.
'She's too similar to Violet-san' Aki mused to himself, recalling a character from another story. 'Imagine she introduces herself like…'
'If a client requests it, we shall go anywhere. Representing the Auto Memoir Doll service. I am Yugito Nii'
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Yugito's lips before she settled back into her stoic demeanor.
Ay observed the introductions with satisfaction before continuing. "Over the past months, you've accompanied Jonin on several A-rank missions, acting as a supporting Chunin. Based on their reports and your performance, I've decided it's time to test your leadership abilities."
Aki's heart skipped a beat. "You mean...?"
(A/N: can you live longer? if you skip a beat daily… I'm curious since I read the first author using the 'heart skipped a beat.')
"That's right," Ay confirmed, his grin widening. "For this mission, you'll be leading the team. Haruto and Yugito will follow your command."
Aki took a deep breath, nodding firmly. "I won't let you down, Raikage-sama."
"I know you won't, you're my son" Ay declared with pride, his tone turning serious. He reached for a scroll on his desk and handed it to Aki. "Now, onto the details of your assignment."
Aki accepted the scroll, unrolling it carefully. As his eyes scanned the contents, Ay began to elaborate.
"Your mission is to escort Princess Kanna of the Land of Frost back to her homeland. She has been in Kumogakure for diplomatic discussions and now needs safe passage home.
However, intelligence suggests that there are multiple threats targeting her, including ninjas from the Hidden Mist and a rebel faction within her own country."
Aki's eyes flickered up from the scroll, absorbing the information. "What's the reason for these threats? Is there a specific motive behind targeting the princess?"
Ay nodded, folding his arms across his chest. "Princess Kanna is set to ascend the throne soon, and her progressive policies threaten the interests of certain groups. The Hidden Mist wants to destabilize the Land of Frost to expand their influence, while the internal rebels aim to seize power for themselves."
Haruto stepped forward; his face serious. "Our route will take us through several high-risk areas. We'll need to be vigilant at all times and prepared for ambushes."
Yugito added, her voice steady, "The safety of the princess is our top priority. We must ensure she reaches her destination unharmed and without incident."
Aki nodded thoughtfully, his mind already formulating strategies. "Understood. We'll need to plan our route carefully, avoid predictable paths, and set up contingency plans in case of attacks."
Ay's eyes gleamed with approval. "That's the spirit. Remember, communication and coordination are key. Rely on your team's strengths and cover each other's weaknesses."
Aki rolled up the scroll, securing it carefully. He looked between Haruto and Yugito, feeling a surge of confidence. "When do we depart?"
"First light tomorrow," Ay replied. "Use the time until then to prepare and coordinate with your team. Dismissed."
Aki bowed respectfully before turning to leave the office, Haruto and Yugito following close behind. As they walked out into the bustling corridors of the Raikage's building, Aki glanced at his new teammates.
"Let's meet in an hour to discuss our plans and preparations," he suggested, his voice clear and authoritative.
Haruto smiled, nodding in agreement. "Sounds good. I'll gather some maps and intel reports we can use."
"I'll ensure our supplies are ready and assess potential threats along our route," Yugito added, her tone professional.
"Great. See you both in an hour at Training Ground Three," Aki confirmed before they parted ways.
An hour later, Aki, Haruto, and Yugito gathered at Training Ground Three. Haruto spread out a map on the ground, pointing out their intended route and highlighting the areas of concern.
"We'll need to avoid these known ambush spots," Haruto explained, tapping a few points on the map. "The rebels might expect us to take the most direct path, so we should consider alternate routes."
Yugito crossed her arms, her eyes scanning the map intently. "We'll also need to keep an eye on the skies. The Hidden Mist might deploy aerial scouts or even send in a few of their shinobi to track us from above."
Aki nodded, absorbing their input. "Agreed. We'll take a less predictable route and stay vigilant for any signs of pursuit. Haruto, you'll handle the reconnaissance. Yugito, you'll be our frontline defense in case of an ambush."
"And with my Byakugan always active, the chance of any ambush succeeding should be kept at a minimum. The only problem is we can't avoid every engagement, since we have to follow certain terrain." Aki continued.
Yugito gave a firm nod, her expression resolute. Haruto smiled slightly, appreciating Aki's decisive leadership.
With the plan set, they finalized their preparations and awaited their departure at first light.
The following morning, the team arrived at the appointed meeting place where they were introduced to Princess Kanna. The princess was young but carried herself with a regal grace that belied her age.
Her sharp, intelligent eyes assessed her protectors quickly, a small smile playing on her lips as she greeted them.
However, as she took in Aki's childlike appearance, her smile faltered slightly, replaced by a look of surprise. "You're the one leading this mission?" she asked, her tone polite but curious.
Haruto stepped forward, sensing the princess's concern. "Princess Kanna, I understand your surprise. Aki is young, but he's demonstrated exceptional skill and leadership in recent missions.
His performance has earned him the trust of the Raikage and the respect of his peers. I assure you, that his abilities are more than sufficient for this task."
Kanna's eyes twitched at those words, still not buying it, but she still turned to Aki in a doubtful tone. "I trust you'll be able to handle the challenges of this mission?"
Aki met her gaze with a steady look. "I will ensure your safety and see you to your destination without incident."
Kanna's expression softened slightly, still doubtful. "Very well. I look forward to what surprises you might have in store."
With that, the team set off prepared to navigate the treacherous terrain and protect Princess Kanna from the threats that lay ahead.
