As the car rumbled along the deserted road, Rose's initial amusement faded, replaced by a gnawing sense of suspicion. She couldn't shake the feeling that Damien was playing her, letting her drop her guard with his charade of happiness.
She was no fool and to set the record, she decided Damien had enjoyed way too much happiness for too long and was going to spoil things.

Damien's expression faltered for a moment, a hint of uncertainty flickering in his eyes before he quickly masked it with a practiced smile. "I'm not sure what you mean," he replied, his voice carefully neutral.
