My Sister's Shadow

The door finally opened, and Alex nearly collapsed with relief. Matthew strolled up to the entrance, wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his lower body. He leaned against the door frame, raising an eyebrow. "Wow, a crowd," he snickered. "What brings you here, Alex?" Alex growled and shoved Matthew against the wall, his breath heavy. "What. Did. You. Do. To. Her?" he gritted out, his face flushed with anger. Matthew displayed no fear; he looked as if he had achieved his goal, and nothing else mattered. "She's right here. Why don't you see for yourself?"

A Day in the Life of the Johnson Sisters

Rise and shine, Deliah," Mrs Johnson awakened her younger daughter with a shake.

Deliah groggily opened her eyes and rubbed them. "Is it morning already?" she asked sleepily.

Mrs Johnson chuckled and helped Deliah out of bed. "Yes, it's time to get up. Your breakfast is ready and I made pancakes. Your father is already downstairs."

"Got it, Mom," Deliah struggled out of bed and headed to the shared bathroom with her sister Sarah.

Mrs Johnson gazed at her daughter with a warm smile. She cherished Deliah and loved seeing her cheerful. She wished for Deliah's smile to never fade.

Mrs Johnson entered the smaller room next door with a view blocked by the neighboring building, but couldn't help but grin upon seeing Sarah sleeping at her desk as usual.

She pondered why Sarah rarely used her bed, considering she always dozed off at her desk. Mrs Johnson approached her daughter slowly and tenderly brushed her soft brown locks, a departure from her typical messy bun.

As Mrs Johnson surveyed the room, she saw the desk covered in essays, books, and information, as per usual, but the rest of the room was spotlessly neat and clean.

"Hey there, sleepyhead!" Mrs Johnson jokingly shook Sarah. "Why are you snoozing at your desk again?" she teased playfully.

Sarah rubbed her eyes and yawned softly, her dark-rimmed glasses falling onto the desk.

She looked up at her mother, trying to make sense of her words. "What, Mom? It's only 7. I'll go wash up and head downstairs for breakfast," she replied, still groggy. Mrs Johnson couldn't help but admire how beautiful her daughter was. Definitely got my genes, she thought playfully. But then Sarah reached for her glasses and put them back on, and Mrs Johnson's face fell. She sighed, knowing that Sarah would never part with her glasses, no matter how much she hoped otherwise.

You should have woken me up so I could help with breakfast, Mom," Sarah murmured. Mrs Johnson patted her elder daughter's head and nudged her out of the room. "And you should have slept in bed," she commented.

Sarah smiled and headed to the bathroom. Mrs Johnson watched her daughter leave and couldn't help but close her eyes momentarily as she felt overwhelmed with emotions. She loved her daughters so much.

"Bye Mom! Bye Dad!" Deliah and Sarah waved as they left the house.

"Bye girls!" Mr Johnson called back.

The sisters walked to the bus stop together, smiling. Deliah let out a loud yawn. "Ugh, I'm so tired," Sarah said, concerned. "What's wrong, Deliah?" she asked. "Are you feeling unwell?" Sarah felt Deliah's forehead.

Nah, Sarah," Deliah giggled as she shook her head. "I was up late chatting with Nancy, Iris, and Yvonne, and I lost track of time."

"Whoopsie-daisy," Sarah playfully rapped Deliah's head. "Take care of yourself, Deliah. You don't want to catch a cold. Make sure you drink plenty of water and get enough rest."

"Stop bossing me around, Sarah," Deliah teased with a smirk.

"Alright, alright," Sarah pouted. "Just make sure you stay healthy, okay? I don't want anything bad happening to you."

"Got it, got it," Deliah grinned.

As soon as the sisters stepped onto the bus, all the guys on board did a double-take, admiring Deliah.

Deliah unconsciously puffed out her cheeks and scrunched up her nose as she waited for her ticket. The guys on the bus couldn't help but coo at her cuteness.

"That girl is a total doll!" one guy nudged his buddy. "Why don't we have any girls like her in our school?"

Deliah took her ticket and walked in to find a seat. Sarah followed suit and saw that no seats were available except for one. "Deliah, sit there." Sarah pointed. "I'll stand." Deliah nodded and sat next to an older woman while Sarah was left to stand beside her younger sister. The guys on board were still admiring Deliah but she wasn't aware, she was just so used to this attention that it didn't matter anymore.

"They call her Deliah Johnson from Grenville High. Even the aliens from outer space know who she is. She's like, the goddess of coolness and all that jazz."

Michael made his way over to Deliah and Sarah had to step back to create some space for him. Despite this, Michael didn't even seem to acknowledge her presence.

"Hi there," he said, flashing a charming smile at Deliah. "I'm Michael Smith. I've heard a lot about you, Deliah. You're quite popular."

Deliah was caught off guard and quickly glanced at Sarah. "Uh, okay?" she replied hesitantly.

Michael didn't let her lack of enthusiasm deter him. "You're absolutely gorgeous, you know that? Words can't even begin to describe your beauty." he complimented.

Deliah's face flushed and she coughed to clear her throat. "Uh, thanks."

As the bus swayed, Michael accidentally bumped into Sarah but he didn't even bother to apologize. Sarah held onto the handrails to keep her balance, blending into the background as she often did.

"I was hoping you would allow me the privilege of getting to know you better?" Michael asked, smiling. Sarah gave a small nod, noting that he was indeed good-looking.

Sarah was worried that Deliah would fall for Michael and give him her number, since she didn't think any guy was good enough for her younger sister.

"Deliah, can I have your number?" Michael asked with a smile, but Deliah was clearly uncomfortable. "I'm sorry, I'm not interested," she replied.

Michael's expression fell. "Oh, okay," he said, before shuffling back to his friends who tried to cheer him up.

"Did you really think she would be interested in you?" one of his friends sneered. "She goes to the same school as Aerospace and she's not dating any of them. What makes you think she'd choose you?"

Michael was filled with embarrassment. "Oh yeah, Aerospace. What was I thinking?"

Sarah chuckled and gave Deliah a nod of approval. "Good one," she mouthed.

Deliah laughed and shook her head, knowing that Sarah was just being overprotective. While it could get annoying at times, she also knew it was just because Sarah loved her.

He's not giving me the wow-factor," Deliah told Sarah with a grin. "You know, that first moment when you lay eyes on a guy and you just know he's the one? That's what I mean by the wow-factor."

Sarah chuckled. "Falling in love at first sight is just a fantasy, Deliah. Love can develop and grow over time too," she said.

Deliah shrugging, "Maybe, but so far, none of the guys I've met have given me that wow-factor," she said with a grin. "Maybe if you spiced up your style a bit, Sarah, you could attract guys too," she suggested, gesturing towards Sarah's simple attire and glasses.

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Here we go again. You know I don't like standing out and prefer to blend in," she said, echoing a familiar argument.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. You prefer to be a wallflower," Deliah said, finishing the sentence for her. "But don't you ever get tired of that? Don't you want guys to court you, bring you flowers, and take you on romantic dates?" she asked. "I just don't think I'll ever understand, Sarah. You're even prettier than I am, you just need to dress up a bit and ditch those glasses," Deliah added with a giggle.

Sarah just smiled. "I'm content with being the boring one," she shrugged.

Deliah laughed. "I'll never understand you," she nodded.

The bus pulled up to their school and the sisters got off. Sarah immediately separated from Deliah, waving goodbye. Deliah was quickly engulfed by the throngs of students while Sarah walked into the school unnoticed, hugging her books close.

Only Deliah's best friends Iris, Yvonne, and Nancy knew of their relationship, and they were sworn to keep it a secret. Deliah wanted to tell others about Sarah, but Sarah wouldn't allow it.

Sarah struggled to keep her balance as she made her way through the bustling crowds of Grenville High. Despite her best efforts to blend in and go unnoticed, she couldn't help but stand out in the shadow of her more outgoing sister, Deliah.

As the morning progressed, the commotion in the hallways reached a fever pitch with a series of screams and excited squeals. Sarah soon realized that the cause of the excitement was the arrival of Six handsome guys. Despite her desire to stay under the radar, Sarah couldn't help but feel jealous of the attention her sister was receiving. But she just wasn't ready for popularity dramas and needed her peace.

"Aerospace! Good morning!!" the girls squealed. "Steve Tyler, you look really handsome today!"

Steve chuckled and nodded politely.

"Joe Perry, you're so tall and handsome kyaaaahhh!!"

Joe smiled and blushed.

If Deliah was that well known in Grenville High, the Aerospace boys were her male counterparts. They were extremely good looking and girls were flocking to them just like how boys flocked to Deliah.

Many students wished for a Deliah-Aerospace pairing, but Deliah wasn't interested. Brad was the only guy out of the Aerospace members to have courted Deliah before, but he ended up falling for Deliah's best friend Nancy.

Perhaps it was because Deliah saw how Brad changed his ways for her best friend, that was why she yearned for a love as dramatic as that.

Sarah could never understand. But then again, she never thought about love nowadays.

Sarah had noticed that the Aerospace boys were quite the lookers, I mean, come on, who wouldn't? But she wasn't just going to swoon over a guy because of his appearance. No sir, she needed more substance. The boys strolled past her without so much as a nod, when BAM! Philip crashes into her, sending her books flying. But before she could even say "Oh no!", Philip was down on his knees, picking up her books and flashing a charming grin. "My bad, Mariah" he says, tipping his imaginary hat before running off to catch up with his bros.

Sarah sighed and hugged her books tighter. "It's Sarah," she muttered. And so another dull day began.
