Rotten Fish Exposed

In the morning, I was jolted awake by the piercing honking of an automobile horn. When I opened the drapes, I could see that the outside was filled with a lot of light. I must have slept for too long. Sonia bolted from the restroom and made her way quickly to the balcony as the car's horn honked repeatedly and loudly.

"I have to get going!

" She yelled and then went back into the room.

She had already finished getting ready and had all of her belongings packed up. It was clear that the car that was blaring outside was there to wait for her. In a rush, she ripped up her purse and fumbled around inside for her makeup kit. She hurriedly applied some makeup as she moved closer to the wall mirror and began her routine.

"Where do you intend to go?

" I asked.

"Right now, my family are on their way back home. "I want to go to the airport with them," she added. "I want to ride down to the airport with them."

“So soon?” I asked.

“Of course, they came for the wedding and they want to return back.”

She started looking around like she was searching for something.

“Did you see my slippers.” She asked. I didn't answer her as there was no way I would have seen it as I just woke up. She searched inside the room and couldn't find it. She went out towards the balcony murmuring to herself.

The horn honked again, this time, persistently. I had to help her search for the slippers. I looked down under the bed and didn't see it; rather, I saw her phone. I helped her pick it up, least she starts looking for it again. The lights of the phone came up as I brought the phone out from under the bed. I must have pressed a button on the phone while trying to bring it out.

Car honk again.

“I'm coming nau!!!” She screamed angrily to no one in particular and ran back to the room. She crossed me and advanced towards the bathroom, in search of the same slippers.

I glanced at the phone screen in my hand. It had a message on the screen; a failure delivery message.

“Here is the stupid slippers.” She said as she came out of the bathroom with one leg of the slippers. She opened the wardrobe and picked her handbag, then opened it and try to smuggle some of her remaining clothing inside it.

Car honk again, this time around, the sound was deafening and I heard calls from downstairs. Something about missing a flight.

I looked at the phone screen again, since there was nothing else to do. A network message was on the screen.

“Message sending failed, press 'Menu' for details.”

Out of curiosity, I pressed the menu button and the phone screen came alive with the details of the message. She must have tried sending a text message and it failed to go through.

I glanced through it and something caught my eye.   The content of the failed message was displayed on the screen.

“The baby is kicking fine. I've gone past two trimesters now and I'm stepping into the final trimester. How is your husband?”

I was alerted!

I checked the phone again to make sure I was seeing the right thing. It was her phone, and she was the sender, not the receiver!

Car honk again and this time, she screamed that she was through.

“Where’s my phone?” she asked and looked to my direction. Our eyes met and she dashed towards me to snatch the phone from me. But I was faster as I moved the phone to my back, holding it firmly and shielding it from her.

“Let me have my phone!” she screamed at me. I could see disappointment and regret on both her voice and her face.

Car honk again.

If I don't leave right now, the two of them are going to be late for their flight! " she yelled in my direction. I had a strong grip on the phone and tried not to be distracted by the horn of the automobile or her screaming. I reflected on the information that I had just read on her phone.

She was really pregnant.

I conducted a swift mental calculation. If it is true that she is now in her second trimester, then the pregnancy has already been going on for a total of six months: the initial three months, followed by another three months, for a grand total of six months. When she entered her third and final trimester, it indicated that she had entered the final three months of her pregnancy, which meant that she was most likely in the seventh month. Then I realized the glaringly obvious fact: she did not terminate the pregnancy.

Another honk from the car. This time, someone could be heard yelling her name coming from the basement.

"You are pregnant." I said. Even though it wasn't a question and it was just a remark, some part of me hoped that there would be some kind of answers and clarification regarding this.

There was none of that.

Indeed, she was carrying a child.

She appeared to be staring at me and then took a few steps backward. She appeared to be considering the most expedient means of evasion or was hoping that assistance would arrive by either the entrance or the balcony. Her eyes darted back and forth between the two locations.

A second honk from the car is followed by the identical yells from the exterior.

"Can you please explain what this means?"

" I asked. In addition to hate and fury, there were a hundred and one questions that were going through my head at the same time. The fury must have been visible in my eyes as she continued to retreat farther and further.

Now the fish with the unpleasant odor smells like rotting fish. I was able to pick up on it in every corner of the room. Now, things are starting to make more sense.

The accumulation of the weight The breasts were soft and the hips were round.

"Start explaining!!!" I said again.

I yelled at her, and she took another step backwards after that. I was able to make out the look of terror in her eyes. In spite of the fact that the air conditioner was still on, she had begun to produce copious amounts of sweat.

I was holding her phone in my hand when it rang, and I looked at the person who was calling. It looks like it's her dad, according to the caller id. I was unfazed by the situation. I was going to find out the solutions to all of the mysteries and problems.

She was able to convince me to listen to her pleading when she told me, "They are going to miss their flight."

“And you are going to lose some teeth if you don’t start talking now.” I screamed at her. I was really furious and angry. How could she play me this way? Seems everything had been a script from the start.

I trusted her! I said to myself.

No, you were greedy and stupid. Said that small whispering voice in my mind.

“Yes, I was pregnant, and I am still pregnant.” Said Sonia.

I slumped on the bed upon hearing this.  It was like all the rage disappeared, draining all my energy with it. The phone rang again and I handed it over to her to answer her call while I brooded over the unfortunate discovery.

How could she do this?

What exactly is going on? I wish I could think straight then. I was confused and in disarray. She was speaking on the phone in her native language. After the call, she sat on the bed beside me.

“You said you got rid of it.” I whispered almost inaudibly.

“No, I said I was going to take care of myself.” She said. “And I did take care of myself.”

“You tricked me into this wedding.” I whispered again.

“I wish you would understand, but I promise to explain everything to you.” She said, trying hard to calm me down.

“I’m all ears.” I said to her.

A knock on the hotel door, and a voice called her from outside. It was the unmistakable voice of her dad.

“I really have to go with them to the airport. When I come back, I will explain everything to you.” She said.

“But why did you hide it up till this moment?” I asked, like I didn’t hear what she just said.

“when I first told you I was pregnant, you freaked out, just like you are freaking out on me now. You were so scared, so I decided to do this on my own.”

Another knock, this time around, it was harder, louder and more persistent.

“I promise to explain everything to you, but right now, I need to be with my dad.” She said and walked out of the room with her bag.

I watched as she left the hotel room. I was too shocked to stand. I sat on the bed and thought about the recent discovery. There were lots of questions in my mind. I decided I must get all the answers from her. From the pregnancy to the wedding. I needed to know why I was used, lied to and deceived to the point of getting married. I felt used.

I was going to get my answers.

I never got the answers.

Because she never returned back to the hotel room.

I never set my eyes on her again, until five months later. .
