Chapter 7: Back to School

Jacob Wick, stood in front of his high school, a mix of nostalgia and trepidation washing over him. It was a place he'd once dreaded, but now, it felt like a distant memory. The irony is that his parents hadn't even noticed he skipped school the previous day. Well One less thing to worry about, he thought with a wry smile.

As he entered the school, the familiar hum of teenage life filled the air. The final two months of the school year were rushing by, and teachers were scrambling to finish their syllabi. It was a perfect opportunity for Jacob to coast through, knowing that the last month would be dedicated to self-study and revision. Once the finals were over, he had a plan – to buy his own college, ensuring a comfortable and carefree college life. And, of course, to distance himself from his neglectful family once he turned eighteen.

Jacob made his way to the back of his classroom, finding a spot right next to the window. As he settled in, he couldn't help but think, "It's funny If this were an anime, I'd be sitting in the protagonist's seat."

Jacob scanned the room, his gaze settling on a group of four students engaged in a lively conversation. One of them, a particularly loud-mouthed individual, was regaling the others with a tale of how their classmate, Noah, had been rejected by Sophia the previous day.

"He turned out to be such a beta," the student declared, eliciting laughter from his friends.

"Yeah, man," another chimed in. "He claimed to be a sigma, but he clearly doesn't have what it takes."

A third student joined the conversation, agreeing wholeheartedly. "You're right. Noah never even mewed."

Jacob listened to his classmates' bizarre conversation, feeling a wave of confusion wash over him. The words they were using were so foreign to him that he couldn't make heads or tails of what they were saying. Despite being only twenty in his previous life, he felt a decade older sitting among these teenagers.

The language they were speaking was a stark contrast to the intellectual discourse he was accustomed to. It made him feel like an old man trapped in a young person's body. Even though the previous owner of this body was also unaware of this strange dialect and would have likely been perplexed by such conversation as well.

The teacher entered the classroom, her tired voice echoing through the room. "Today is our last day for English," she announced. "After today, we'll be doing self-study and revision. If you have any questions or need help with anything, please come to me and I'll do my best to assist you."

Jacob listened to the teacher's words, his mind still reeling from the strange conversation he had just overheard. He didn't know the teacher's name, and to be honest, he didn't know name of any teacher in this school.

The teacher pulled out a novel from her bag and began reading aloud. She was explaining the final part of the story, but her voice seemed to have a soporific effect on the class. Within minutes, ninety percent of the students were drifting into a deep slumber.

The teacher sighed, not surprised by the reaction. It was a common occurrence whenever she read aloud. Only the students in the front row seemed to be able to stay awake. The rest of the class had entered the world of dreams.

The teacher couldn't help but wonder what was so inherently boring about the novel that her students couldn't resist the urge to sleep through her readings. When she first read the book, she had enjoyed it immensely.

Jacob was struggling to fight off the urge to sleep. He glanced at the students in the front row, marveling at their willpower. He was barely able to keep his eyes open, and it wasn't because the story was boring. It was the teacher's teaching style that was so sleep-inducing. She would read a sentence and then pause to explain it. It was a jarring and disruptive way to tell a story.

The bell rang, jolting Jacob awake. He realized he had dozed off during a significant portion of the English class. But he wasn't alone. Everyone else in the class seemed to have taken a forced nap thanks to the teacher's boring teaching style.

As few more classes ended, Jacob realized it was lunchtime. He had never understood the school's insistence on not allowing students to eat before lunch. It seemed like an arbitrary rule.

Jacob reached for his lunchbox, but his hand came up empty. A string of memories flooded his mind, reminding him of how his mother often forgot to pack his lunch. With a sigh, he realized he would have to buy something to eat. Fortunately, he had plenty of money.

Just as Jacob was about to stand up, he heard a voice in his head.

[Ding It is detected that the host lacks a cooked meal. To prevent such an atrocity from happening again, the system rewards the host with a maid.]

Jacob's eyes widened. The system was crazy. It rewarded him with random things, and now it was giving him a maid? He asked the system what would happen if he refused the reward.

[The maid in question will die]

Jacob was taken aback by the system's response. "Do you have no moral system?" he asked, his voice filled with disbelief.

[Ding Do forgive me, host, If any of my actions seem to have caused you misunderstanding, it is because I, as a system, have no morals or any kind of emotions at all.]

Jacob was reluctant to accept the reward, but he knew he had no choice. "Fine," he said. "Just don't let her come to my school today. We can meet later."

Jacob bought some food and headed up to the rooftop forget system altogether. He had seen protagonists in anime often eating lunch on rooftops, so he thought he would try it too. However, he soon realized that the rooftop was off-limits to students. Undeterred, he sat down on the stairs and began to eat.

The food he had bought was unhealthy but delicious; it would not hurt to eat unhealthy food occasionally. As he ate, he heard the system's voice again.

[Ding The host is rewarded with a mansion worth 100 million.
