Chapter One: Fight

I woke up this morning feeling unusually happy but you can't blame me. I'm finally getting my system and becoming an actual hybrid. I know you guys won't get it since you're from like a system less dimension but this is one of the best things that can ever happen to a kid... I mean man of my age. A system is the foundation of my life, the only thing that kept me alive from birth till now. I mean if not for knowing that by sixteen I would get my system, I'm sure I would have died a long time ago. That makes sense right? Yeah, it makes sense. So... any ways what was I talking about, oh yeah I'm finally getting my system, it's a privilege, blah, blah, blah. And after hyperventilating and pinching myself a few times to see if I was dreaming I looked at all my luggage tucked in one corner of my room and thought

'It's actually real. I'm becoming a hybrid.'

"Shit! It's already 8:00 am. I'm gonna be late." I said looking at the clock on my bedside table.

I hurriedly entered the bathroom to brush my teeth and when I tried to do it as fast as I could, my hand got sore. That's what hybrid powers are for. If I had their agility then this wouldn't be so tiring. Anyways, after brushing my teeth I went into my closet to pick out my clothes that I got at the mall the previous day. I put them on the bed and went back to the bathroom to take a shower. I bathed like my life depended on it cause, you know, I had to look presentable for my first day at the academy. When I finished, I put on my clothes which consisted of black pants, a black, long-sleeved button up shirt and a sleek black tuxedo blazer. And as for the accessories, a red tie, some cufflinks, a pair of Nike sneakers and my most valuable watch. You don't need to know how much it cost. I knotted my tie and looked myself over in the mirror.

"Ahh, no. I look too desperate."

I removed my tie and undid the first button on my shirt.

"Better, but still too desperate."

I tried removing the blazer but it still wasn't right.

"Screw this!" I said while removing my outfit and going to my closet to pick out a better outfit.

I found a black over-sized hoodie belonging to my brother, Mike, and a pair of black jeans after ravaging through my luggage too. I put it on and hid my watch under the sleeve of my hoodie.

"Ahh, I'll just go with it."

"HUNTER!!" I heard my mom scream from downstairs.

"Yeah! What's up!! "

"Come down for breakfast!!"

"I'll be right down!!"

I hurriedly put my original clothes in one of my suitcases and went downstairs. I saw my mom and younger brother, Ryder, already at the table eating. Now Ryder is a very important part of this story. He is my stepbrother not my actual brother. My dad left my mom the day after I was born and came back three years later with another woman, Ryder was also with them but he was two at the time. So, my dad impregnated my mom again and then left with the woman but without Ryder and that is how he joined our family. Since our dad left I have been trying to get along with him but he's hard to deal with. But the most unfair thing is I'm the only person with any resemblance to my dad in any way. If Ryder doesn't count. My dad has black hair, I have black hair, he has dark brown eyes, I have dark brown eyes, my brother, Zac, has my mom's brown hair and blue eyes. My little sister also has my mom's brown hair and blue eyes. Ryder got my dad's black hair and brown eyes. I added hints of green to my hair and got a piercing on my left ear while Ryder dyed his red and got a piercing on his right ear. He's just copying me right? Anyways, back to breakfast.

An empty plate was on the table with orange juice on its side and a stack of waffles in the middle of the table. I sat in the chair where the empty plate was in front of and put some waffles on my plate, added a bit of maple syrup and a lot of whipped cream.

"What happened to the outfit you made me get you yesterday?" My mom asked as I started devouring my breakfast.

"It just…. Felt too desperate." I said but my mouth was so full it probably sounded like a bunch of gibberish.

"Could you say it without food in your mouth, I didn't get a word you said."

I gulped down the waffles and drank some of my orange juice to stop myself from choking.

"Oh, sorry, I said it just felt too desperate."

"Is that a surprise, you always look desperate" Ryder said, taking a sip of his orange juice but I just ignored him as my mom said

"You couldn't realize this before you made me spend five hundred credits on the outfit."

"You couldn't get me that kind of outfit when I was graduating from middle school?" Ryder said looking at me like I was an annoying bug that he wanted to squash. I don't know if it was because of the outfit or the fact that I ignored him or cause he just hated me.

"Don't be jealous little brother. Why would my...?"

"Step-brother."

You see what I was complaining about, I've been trying to get along with him for thirteen years and this is how far I've come. Its super annoying, I mean after all we've been through I at least thought our shared hatred for our dad which is literally the only thing we have in common would bring us together enough for him to be okay with me calling him my little brother or at least just brother. It kinda hurt so I didn't have enough time to inwardly filter my speech before saying the first thing that came to my head in my current state.

"Okay, step-brother. Since you want to bring that up, why would my mom spend her hard-earned money on the son of a deadbeat and a whore…?"

"Okay that's enough!!" My mom said standing up to stop my SSTEEEEPP-brother from attacking me. Emphasis on the step.

"Why are you guys always going at each other's throats?"

"Just let him go, he can't do nothing to me."

"Enough!!"

"Come say that to my face you damned …."

"I said ENOUGH!!!"

"Urrgh." Ryder grunted before sitting down muttering under his breath.

"What's up with you guys and your constant fighting? All this over a few credits and an outfit. And Hunter, don't call your dad a deadbeat. He's still your dad." My mom said looking frustrated.

"You can call him my dad if you want to but my dad wouldn't miss my whole childhood with the exception of a few weeks which I can't even remember." I said standing up to leave the table.

"Why must you guys always fight? Even today when you're leaving home for the academy."

"I'm sorry if our fighting upsets you mom but I can never get along with the cause of your divorce. The divorce that caused you so much pain."

Yeah I kinda lied about this part cause I would look like a crybaby if I said something like

'I love him but I'm hurt he doesn't love me back or I will really miss him but I'm trying to be angry at him to stop myself from crying.'

So I just blamed him for my parent's divorce.

"So what if my dad cheated on your mom with mine. I didn't beg to be born that way, into a broken family with parents who eventually abandoned me with you guys and went to who knows where!" Ryder said before leaving. Yeah I know, not the best outcome but at least no one thinks I'm a crybaby.
