My Bastard Ex

[From the novel: Jason is talking] "Choose any of them..." - I bend the corners of my mouth in a mischievous smile, showing my new friend the room full of women jumping in the air to the rhythm of the music, showing their smooth legs when their skimpy clothes rise and leading me to pass my tongue between my lips, while my gaze becomes darker and darker when I meet the eyes of a blonde staring at me from afar.   "And she will become yours." - I conclude with a more mischievous tone than before, throwing him a quick glance to make sure that he has not regretted and that he will follow our game for the rest of the year.   "I want her." - he finally opens his mouth, lifting his chin towards my shoulders after taking a long look around, definitely looking for the woman with the shortest skirt and the most showing off boobs. At the sound of his voice I sneak my fingers through my disheveled hair, following the direction of his perverted gaze a couple of meters behind me, but the smile dies on my lips when my eyes fall on the figure of a woman sitting in a corner of the great hall, with an annoyed expression on her face and her cheeks swollen with anger, as if she had been forced to come to this party. "Do you know her?" The muscles of my neck tighten when my friend continues to insist, while my expression goes from perplexed to serious instantly, without ceasing to stare at her from afar.   She came to a party with one of her usual black sweatshirts: she looks like a black sheep among a thousand models. I raise an eyebrow when I notice that she is holding a book in her hand, while her friend tries to get her attention, playing with the long brown locks that I only now realize how much they have grown.   "She's seriously reading a book at a party. Who is she?" - I straighten my shoulders when the fucking voice of the man next to me catches my attention, taking my eyes off the figure of the woman behind me with an annoyed grimace: "My ex."

I take a deep breath to get some freezing air, then run a strand of hair behind my ear to let my brown waves begin to sway at my shoulders, but as soon as I stop the car in the company parking lot and walk out of the car I shiver from the cold.

Only now I regret not wearing a cardigan over my heavy sweatshirt.

I slam the door behind me, squeezing my bag between my fingers as I lift my head up.

The skyscraper in front of me makes me feel so small that for a moment I forget about the cold and start worrying about my abilities, as if all this is situation is too much for me, while a cloud of steam comes out of my lips and reminds me to return to reality.

I bring my lower lip between my teeth as my lips attack from the cold, starting to torture the corner of my mouth with anxiety.

I know I'm worth it, but I also know that Mr Bartol has over a thousand employees in this building and it will be a constant struggle to be in the center of their attention today.

The fact that there are so many employees and so many offices consoles me, so much that in these days I have done nothing but hoping not to end up on the same floor of the office of that bastard.

I grit my teeth at the only thought, but try to convince myself that it won't happen.

I free my lip from my teeth and give myself the courage to step inside the building, hurrying to reach the elevator with a firm step when I see it from afar at the end of the great hall.

This place seems luxurious and I find myself so out of place that part of me suggests to escape before I enter Mr Bartol's office.

I widen my eyes when I get close enough to understand that the elevator doors are closing, at which I increase my pace, catching the gaze of the man who is already inside the metal box.

I close my eyes when I see him take on a surprised and amused expression at the same time, but without lifting a finger to stop the elevator and wait for me.

"Asshole." - I say through my teeth when I understand that he did it on purpose, perhaps to make me understand how unwelcoming Bartol's employees are, but as soon as I turn my back to the elevator, snorting, the sound of the doors opening behind me force me to turn around again.

I straighten my back when I find myself in front of the tall blond, who looks at me with the same amused and somewhat annoying expression on his face.

I grit my teeth to hide my anger and keep myself from asking him why is he watching me like that, as I take a couple of steps to finally enter the elevator.
