Dave again raised his hand. “But how? How could you have possibly known? How could you have possibly found us? I mean, we didn’t even know any of this would happen.”
A second policeman was crouching down next to Tess’s lifeless body. He looked up and pointed at Ma. “Your mother called us.”
She reached us just at that moment. “Ma,” I said, with a sigh.
“You boys alright?” she asked, checking me for bullet wounds.
I nodded and pointed at the ground. “Better than her.”
Ma flinched. It wasn’t a pretty sight. Could’ve been a worse sight, namely us down there, so I wasn’t complaining. “I called her at the store to ask about Rosemary’s grave,” Ma then told us.
“So Tess said,” I replied.
