Chapter 149: Nuclear Bomb Attack

On the space carrier, Nick Fury was on a video call with the council.

"Director Fury, New York has been overrun by a large number of Chitauri, and our forces are struggling to hold them back. We've also received reports of a similar invasion in Wakanda, Africa. The council has decided..."

"I understand, but I refuse to issue that order. It would be utterly reckless!"

Nick Fury interrupted, knowing exactly what was about to be proposed.

The World Security Council in this universe is very different from the real-world United Nations. It is almost entirely controlled by the United States and its representatives, essentially serving as a higher authority over S.H.I.E.L.D.

It's a long-standing American practice to resolve insurmountable crises with nuclear weapons. This approach has been depicted in numerous films and TV shows.

Another council member interjected, "Director Fury, your aircraft is closer to the target area. Launch it immediately!"

Maria Hill, standing nearby, exclaimed, "Director, that's Manhattan Island!"

Nick Fury shook his head, "Until my team is out of options, I will not deploy a nuclear weapon against civilians!"

Even with the Avengers fighting valiantly, he would hesitate repeatedly before ordering a nuclear strike.

Because of an incident seventy years ago, Thor's intervention caused the Manhattan Project to fail before the end of World War II, so nuclear weapons had never been used in warfare—and certainly not against their own people...

The council member's tone grew stern: "Director Fury, your so-called team is merely a ragtag group! If New York falls to these monsters, the damage will be irreversible!"

Nick Fury retorted, "Using a nuclear bomb would be irreversible in its own way!"

"Dr. Erik, close the portal!"

Thor ignored the fleeing Loki, picked up the scepter that had fallen to the ground, and took control of Erik's mind.

The doctor's eyes cleared, and he shook his head, "That barrier is pure energy; it cannot be broken!"

Thor lifted the scepter and shook it: "The scepter can't help?"

Dr. Erik glanced at it, still smiling wryly: "I had left a safety mechanism to cut off the energy source, which could be done with the scepter. However, Loki has ensured that the current barrier cannot be breached..."

"Really? Then I'll give it a try."

Thor leaped up, channeling the Phoenix Force through his body, with both berserk energies pouring into Mjölnir.

"Boom..."

Thunderclouds gathered, and Mjölnir's high-speed rotation created a world-destroying tornado aimed at the Tesseract.

A deafening roar shook the sky, and the energy barrier flickered briefly but quickly restored itself.

Despite the full force, it barely made a dent!

Thor steadied himself and raised his hammer to the sky, shouting, "For Asgard!"

Instantly, his body expanded several times, and a layer of white, petrified skin enveloped him.

He swung Mjölnir at the energy barrier with tremendous force.

"Boom--"

This time, the energy barrier dimmed slightly, though it was rapidly recovering.

"Boom--"

"Commander Nick Fury has been relieved of command and the order - 7A11 has been issued!"

On the space carrier, a flight officer received notification from the council and prepared a plane for launch.

Soon, staff in the command room reported to Nick Fury.

"Sir, we have an aircraft taking off without authorization!"

Maria Hill anxiously watched the screens and shouted, "Everyone, organize the planes on the deck for takeoff!"

"Damn it! A bunch of idiots!"

Nick Fury cursed the council members, realizing they had likely issued the order.

"These fools really want to destroy the world!"

Nick Fury understood that once a nuclear bomb detonated, it wouldn't only obliterate New York.

Many of Thor's family members were in the New York manor. If something went wrong...

The entire North American continent could be devastated!

As S.H.I.E.L.D. Director, Nick Fury was privy to much sensitive information.

In the past, due to Peggy Carter, many of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s enemies sought revenge against their families, including Thor's manor...

No one succeeded; those who attempted it faced severe retribution, regardless of their status, with their entire families uprooted.

Nick Fury grabbed a bazooka and hurried to the deck.

"Boom--"

The newly launched fighter was hit, its wings damaged, causing it to spin and crash onto the deck.

Wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, Nick Fury sighed in relief as another plane zoomed past him.

"Dammit!"

He cursed, drawing his pistol and aiming, but it was too late; the fighter jet soared into the sky.

Maria Hill's voice came over the communicator, "Director, two more planes have taken off! Both are carrying missiles with nuclear warheads!"

"Damn it, they're going to destroy the sky! Wait, why two? Where's the other one headed besides New York?"

"It looks like... Wakanda!"
