Chapter Eleven: Well, I Have a Showdown, I Am...
The Super Soldier Project base was located beneath an antique shop. Guided by the agent, Steve descended the steps to observe the interior layout.
Security was incredibly tight. It was clear that the military considered this project of utmost importance.
If there was an internal issue, there was no way around it.
Inside, Steve encountered several familiar faces: Dr. Abraham, Colonel Phillips, and Howard Stark—the future industrial magnate Tony Stark's father, now an older gentleman.
"Damn it, you should give this kid something to eat!" a congressman remarked upon seeing Steve's lean physique.
Steve lay on the obviously oversized operating table as the serum was injected. Howard Stark then pressed a switch, and the apparatus began to close slowly.
"10%—"
"20%—"
"50%—"
"Click—" The lights in the entire laboratory began to flicker...
…
Suddenly, the lights in the café dimmed and flickered, as did the entire city outside.
"Donald Blake, 25 years old, born in Alaska, graduated from xxx School, formerly a doctor..."
Even Odin's meticulous deception had holes.
"Stop, stop, just tell me the truth." Peggy maintained a serious expression.
"It is the truth. If you don't believe me, you can investigate."
Thor remained equally impassive.
This woman was so skilled at reading faces that she could determine truthfulness from expressions, better than a lie detector...
Peggy opened a file. "I investigated this long ago, and all the information in your file can be verified, including your registration, former schools, hospitals, and even some awards you've received...
There are no discrepancies.
It's evident that you've been very high-profile in various aspects since your youth, not just in terms of skill."
She paused, observing Thor's expression. Her voice grew serious: "Such a person, as a classmate, colleague, or neighbor, would undoubtedly leave a deep impression, just as you did in the military camp. Now, you're quite a celebrity."
Thor nodded, signaling her to continue.
Peggy smiled faintly and continued, "If one day I discover that everyone in the barracks, including all members of the super soldier selection team, as well as Phillips and Abraham, neither knows you nor is aware of your existence...
But your name is still on record, what does that mean?"
Thor's eyes grew contemplative.
He had already been cast into a new world when he arrived on Earth; there was no need to revisit the so-called hometown of Alaska.
The memories of Donald Blake were actually fabricated through magic.
His true identity was also false. Although Odin had made his disguise almost flawless, it was impossible for God - king to sneak like thief in human homes alter the memories of so many people...
Peggy's comment indicated she had conducted a thorough investigation.
The smile faded from Peggy Carter's face: "It's not just you, Steve, Hodge...
The super soldier project's importance is unparalleled, and all potential threats must be carefully monitored.
The identity of every potential participant must be rigorously verified.
If I hadn't taken on the task of investigating you, it would not be me, but a squad of fully armed soldiers standing before you now."
"So, you need to explain yourself!"
Thor was silent for a moment before dropping his pretense and chuckling, "So what do you think? Do you suspect that I am..."
He traced two crossed S symbols on the table with his finger.
"Snap—"
A gun was instantly aimed at him: "Who the hell are you?"
She soon lowered the gun again: "No, not you."
Staring at Thor, Peggy's voice grew more serious: "The Strategic Intelligence Agency sacrificed three agents to gather intel that the Germans are trying to steal information about the super soldier program, and they are likely to attempt it today."
She glanced at Thor with a conflicted expression: "In the past few months, the doctor has not fortified you. You had numerous opportunities to act, and with your skill, the success rate would have been quite high. But you did not act, so we can tentatively rule out your involvement."
Thor nodded: "Thank you for your trust. You're right; the lunatics with mustache aren't worth my time."
Rising slowly, he declared firmly, "I have a showdown to make, I am—Thor!"
