Chapter 6:

(The Evans house)

A lot of champagne popped up in the air and joyful cheers filled the room. A man in his fifties and a woman in her forties seemed to celebrate after a successful business plan.

"Oh honey, I told you this would work out but you never believed me," Yelena said as she sipped greedily from her wine glass.

"I'm sorry dear, I never expected she would agree to it so quickly without proper thinking. Well, her foolishness does work out for us!" Thomas replied, gratefully, filling his glass with more wine.

"As I said from the start, the girl is just as foolish as her mother. They're both easy to push around like a ball," Yelena hissed with irritation.

"Haha! That's good. Now, we have both the company and the money. We're rich darling!" Thomas exclaimed in excitement. He couldn't believe it was easy to play the most dangerous man in the city. But since the deal between them had been settled, there shouldn't be any grief, right?

Yelena felt a cold chill down on her body when a thought hit her head. They'd just played the most dangerous man in the city! What would he do to them if the truth eventually came out that the girl they sent to him wasn't their daughter Sofia but her husband's late brother's daughter, Lilly!

Would he kill them?

Her heart throbbed in fear as her mind ran through different thoughts. She was already calculating a saving plan for herself, incase the situation turned around. From the rumors she had heard about Nicklaus, he wasn't a nice man at all. He was a beast in the flesh of humans, a devil in disguise. That was what this man was!

"Darling," she called, in a shriving voice.

"Yes..." Thomas answered and gulped even more wine. He wasn't even scared of what they had done, he felt pride seep through his bones and he couldn't be more excited.

"What do you think Nicklaus would do to us when he finds out we lied to him about Lilly?"

Thomas almost choked on his wine as the name 'Nicklaus' drove a cold spear into his veins.

One thing he never wanted to happen was falling into the spider's web. Nicklaus wasn't known as the devil for nothing. He was also mostly described as the 'poisonous scorpion' waiting for the right time to attack and all these were not for nothing.

"I— I don't think he's going to find out," Thomas stammered and tried to sip on his wine again but the liquid had lost its taste in his mouth.

"Are you sure about that? You know nothing can go under the devil's eyes without notice. He has a lot of eyes everywhere!"

Thomas was trying to enjoy his victory without thinking of a fall back, but Yelena seemed deeply concerned about what would happen to them if things were revealed!

"I have told you before and I would say it again, he wouldn't find out! Or are you the one going to tell him that we played him to get money and favor for our company?" Thomas thundered at his wife. She was getting on his nerves with all these panicking questions.

He couldn't keep his head down with all the stupid questions his wife was throwing at him. And as far he knew, if none of them had to tell the devil the truth, everything would go out fine.

It had always been his dream to become the next CEO of the Newton Corporation. But his useless father handled it over to his younger brother, Peter!

Peter has always been ahead of him in everything in life, he got the inheritance that Thomas had always wanted. Peter also got married to the most beautiful woman in the city.

Life had always been easy for Peter, but to Thomas, life was unfair. In a way to get all he wanted, he had to be smarter and intelligent like the snake, waiting for the best opportunity to attack, and when that opportunity came, he didn't hesitate to get to it. That meant getting rid of his brother and his wife.

Yelena stood up from her couch and went to the side of her moody husband, who shouted at her but had been silent since then. She knew he might be thinking about his past sins and how he managed to get them this far.

"You know everything I have always done was for you and our daughter. I want you guys to have the best life you can dream of. Money, riches, and power. These are the only three things we need to be respected in society," Thomas explained calmly.

He knew he had done the worst in his life, but he never regretted those actions. He was proud to be the one who killed that bastard that always liked to prove himself as the best son. Since childhood he had being living in the shadows of his brother, but now, he had become the king of the jungle. No one could stop him. Not even Nicklaus.

Yelena tapped her husband's shoulder and said, "I know you did all this for me, and I'm proud to call you my husband."

Thomas held his wife's hands and smiled.

"So, why don't we enjoy this moment instead of ruining it with the memories of those bastards that died," Thomas said sternly, as the thoughts of the past irritated him the more.

"Yes, of course. Let's celebrate, cheers to the riches!"

"Cheers!"

"Uncle and aunt!" A girlish sweet voice called from behind. Thomas and Yelena turned to see who the intruder was that ruined their wonderful afternoon. It was no one but their little prey.

She was clothed in the most expensive fabric and shoes. Looking like a beautiful dove with no stains on it and this made them wonder if they'd sent her to hell or heaven.

Yelena rolled her eyes in hatred but she quickly replace it with a sweet motherly smile before the girl got closer to them.

"Oh Lilly, you're back?" Thomas asked as he dropped the glass of wine to show his fake worried expression.

"I-I am fine," Lilly stuttered with a breaking voice. She didn't want her family to see the pain due was going through. She had done it for them, she had to make them happy.

"Come here you darling," Yelena said and embraced the girl in her arms. "I know you're not okay but you did the right thing. You have saved your father's only hope."

Lilly didn't want to shed any tears but she couldn't stop herself from letting the tears out. The thought of the unknown man touching her body irritated her the most. But she had to sacrifice her innocence for her father's company.

"Are you sure the company is fine now?" Lilly asked in her breaking voice as she was still wrapped in Yelena's arms.

"Yes..yes, of course, the company is fine now!" Thomas said before his wife could say a word.

"Thanks, uncle. You guys are the best thing that has ever happened to me," Lilly said warm-heartedly. Unknown to her, she was referring to the two green snakes under the green grass.

"I think you should go to your room and freshen up. There's a nice cooked dish waiting for you in the kitchen," Yelena said so as to send the girl up.

Lilly nodded. She needed some space alone to think about what just happened to her. Approving Yelena's words, she headed straight to the stairs.

When the girl's presence finally disappeared, Yelena shifted closer to her husband, who was still staring at the stairs blankly.

"You see what I say, she can be our little puppet and all we have to do is to pretend we care about her."

Lilly entered her room and slowly shut the door behind her. She broke down in tears as her heart was heavy and clouded with darkness. The pain she felt was beyond explanation. She saw herself as a betrayal and a slut. A woman who betrayed the one person she loved, and the worse part, they were both planning to get married soon.

That was the most important thing that was bothering her now; telling Michael the truth. She didn't want this to throw their relationship in the pit but she had to. Sooner or later, he would find out if he didn't find out from her.

Besides, this was the man that would soon be her husband... she couldn't keep this from him.

She wiped her tears and got her purse, which was laying on the bed. She needed to meet Michael and explain everything that had happened to him. She couldn't keep him in the dark forever. He deserved the truth, she said to herself, and headed out.

By the time she got back to the lounge, Thomas and Yelena were still enjoying themselves over their little victory. But to Lilly she saw it as a simple moment between the sweetest couple she had ever met. To her, she thought they were drinking to stop worrying about her.

"I'll be back soon," she said on her way out.

Yelena and Thomas didn't even bother to ask where she was going. Why would they disturb themselves with her when they have already gotten what they wanted?
