Chapter 6

“You don’t feel a little strange?” Lucky asked.

Small lines appeared between her fine brows as she looked up at him, but any quip she might have made stayed unsaid as his seriousness sank in. Her eyes slid sideways. “I don’t know if I’d call it strange,” she said. “I don’t feel like we drank a bottle and a half of champagne before crashing the poker party, though.”

“You feel sober? Is this sobriety? I don’t think I like it.”

“You’re just not used to it. Shane seems to like it just fine, so it can’t be that bad.”

“Yes, well, Shane’s different. We can’t all be like Shane.” No matter how hard we might try.“I wasn’t aware that driving your car into a pole could sober a person up.”

“It’s the shock,” Stella pronounced. “It must be. But let’s not use this method again, okay? Even if we do get a new car out of it.”

“Yes, I don’t think that’ll be a problem.” Lucky looked over his shoulder. “Did you notice if anybody else was involved? I hope nobody was hurt.”
