When he had finally joined her on the beach, she didn’t chastise him, or even ask him what he had been doing. When he looked in her eyes, he didn’t see any rage there. His own anger was just that. His own. How had she forgiven him? How could she? Lucky didn’t know, but he didn’t spend another second trying to hide from her. Corrine was good about not hovering. After she let them in the house and offered a short tour, she left them to their own devices. By the end of the morning, all of the houses were starting to blur for Lucky. He began to measure them by how many times Stella smiled, and how accepting Shane was of the price tag.

“You don’t have to look so bored, you know.” Stella looped her arm through Lucky’s and pulled him toward the large picture window that overlooked an extensive deck in the backyard. “Isn’t it perfect for sunbathing? I never have to worry about getting burned again.”
