“Does he see you?” Stella said.

“No,” Shane answered before Lucky could. “But I sure as hell feel you.” To prove his point, he lifted his hand and unerringly grasped Lucky’s wrist.

“I knew it! I told you, Stella. I told you that Shane would be able to feel us.” Shane didn’t let go of him, and Lucky didn’t try to pull away. For the first time since he saw the mangled Mustang, the world started to make sense.

“You’re dead.”

Stella touched his cheek. “But we’re still here.”

“How?”

“We walked. The traffic was too awful.”

A reluctant bark of laughter came from Shane’s throat. “Oh, Stella…”

Lucky could feel Shane’s heart pounding. A rapid rhythm. It was strange not to feel his own heart. “We don’t know whywe’re still here, but we think it has something to do with you.”
