Summary: You were extraordinary when it came to hiding the fact that you were hurting. You could lie to yourself and to everyone else, well almost everyone.

……………………………………………………

You held the tissue to your bleeding nose. You had locked yourself in the precinct bathroom, blaming your nose bleed on the dry weather of Los Angeles.

’’

You ignored the little voice in the back of your mind and fixed yourself before heading out of the bathroom. All you wanted was to stay home, and sleep, but you were trying to keep up appearances and so you brought Chloe, Dan, Ella, and Lucifer coffee like you did every morning. You stayed to chat, and offer Ella help like you always did. You wondered how much longer you’d be able to do that.

“Are you alright Y/N? That was a nasty bleed.” Ella said.

You smiled waving a hand dismissively.

“Yeah, it was nothing really, wasn’t as bad as it looked.”

That wasn’t a total lie, it was a lighter nose bleed then you had been getting. You changed the subjected instead opting to talk about how Chloe was doing with the case. You never noticed Lucifer watching you intently. He frowned when your smile fell as soon as everyone’s attention was off of you. You leaned against the desk subtly, as if just standing, there exhausted you.

“Are you sure you’re feeling alright my dear?” Lucifer asked.

Everyone’s eyes fell on you and you stood up straight, forcing another smile. You managed a laugh and shrugged.

“Honestly, I didn’t sleep last night, too much on my mind.”

’’

The voice sounded louder, but still you ignored the dread eating away at you. You took that opportunity to excuse yourself so you could go home and ‘rest’. Lucifer watched you hurry out of the precinct, so distracted he didn’t hear Chloe talking to him.

“Lucifer!”

He blinked turning his head to look at them.

“I’m sorry Detective did you say something?”

Chloe sighed and repeated herself. Lucifer only half listened, his mind drifting back to how pale and tired you had looked. How he just now began to notice you had been looking more and more tired every day.

“Lucifer! Where are you going?”

He had gotten up and simply left, ignoring Chloe and Dan calling after him, as he hurried up the stairs.

~

You lay on the couch, staring at the wall as bloody tissues littered the floor. You didn’t have the energy to make it up the stairs to your bedroom. Your phone rung faintly and you searched the ground for it. Lucifer’s name flashed across the screen and your finger hovered over the decline button. You ended up answering it instead.

“Hi Lucifer! What’s up?” Your voice sounded so full of energy and life.

“I’m on my way to your house and-”

Your eyes widened, and you sat up, looking around the living room. You stood quickly, waiting for the light headedness to past before hurrying to clean.

“Y/N? Are you still there darling?”

You only just realized Lucifer was still on the phone, and waiting for a response. What did he ask? You couldn’t remember.

“Yes?”

You hoped that was the right answer.

“Wonderful! I’ll be there shortly!”

He hung up and you stared at your phone. Your light headedness returned as you sat down, with your head in your hands. He probably wouldn’t be there long, you just had to smile and act like you were fine.

’ ’

The voice was back, and you felt a single tear fall onto your lap. Your front door swung open and you didn’t even have to look to know who it was.

“Most people knock Lucifer.” You teased, standing up.

“I think it’s safe to say I’m not most people, my dear.” He scoffed.

You laughed, shaking your head. Lucifer held up the brown paper bag he was holding, looking proud of himself.

“I brought your favorites, something to cheer you up.”

You accepted the bag and peered inside. You glanced at him raising and eyebrow.

“Cheer me up? I didn’t realize I  cheering up.”

Lucifer rolled his eyes making you laugh again and you made your way to the kitchen to stick the food in the oven. Lucifer followed you, watching as you pressed various buttons on your oven, or as he liked to call it, horribly dated time bomb. You always had to remind him, you didn’t have an endless amount of money like he did.

“Honestly, that thing looks ready to explode darling, why do you refuse to let me buy you a new one?”

“Mine works just fine Lucifer.” You rolled your eyes.

A coughing fit seized you and you turned away from the food. Something wet hit your hand, and you glanced down.

“Is that blood?”

Your entire body stiffened and you quickly grabbed a paper towel.

“It’s nothing.” You muttered.

Lucifer grabbed your wrist and you fought back the urge to cry in frustration. You were doing so good hiding it.

“Y/N, are you… sick?”

Lucifer looked concerned, worried, and what caught you off guard the most was the distraught expression he had on his face. Was he that worried?

’ ’

That thought seemed echo and scream at you. You felt wet angry tears falling down your cheeks and Lucifer instinctively reached a hand up to wipe them away.

“I’m dying Luc, I don’t… I don’t know what to do.” You muttered broken.

“Dying!? Bloody hell love!” He exclaimed in shock.

“It’s been months Luci, don’t worry about me, I’m doing ok, please don’t treat me like glass, I don’t need anyone’s pity.”

“Pity? You think I’m pitying you? Oh love no, I’m just… why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“It’s not your battle to fight.” You smiled sadly.

His response was almost instantly to pull you into a tight embrace. He held you as if he was afriad letting you go would mean you would disappear.

“Oh Y/N, I’m so sorry darling, I had no idea. Why would you hide that from us?” He mumbled.

You held him tightly and shook your head.

“No one can do anything about it. The surgery is to expensive for me. I can’t ask any of you guys for help.” You said trying to pull away from him both physically and emotionally.

His concern and his care overwhelmed you, and your instincts yelled at you to protect yourself. Lucifer wasn’t having any of that and grabbed your arms to stop you.

“You’re not asking for my help darling. I’m asking you to  for me.” He said sternly eyes searching yours.

“But-”

“I won’t take no for an answer, you take care of every one else, let me take care of you Y/N. I’m calling in that favor you owe me, so you’ve got to live darling.”

Your tears stained his shirt and you swallowed slowly nodding. His bright smile made your heart flutter.

“Ok.”
