The day was over, the students yet again dragged their tired bodies back to their dormitories.
It was midnight, The darkness of the night was palpable, a living entity that wrapped itself around the camp, the only sound being the distant hooting of an owl.
The students slumbered in their dormitories, oblivious to the secrets that lurked in the shadows.
In Zhang Han's cabin,
The air was heavy with anticipation.
The creaking of the door broke the silence, and a shadowy figure slipped inside.
Zhang Han, sitting behind his desk, remained still, his handsome face illuminated by the moonlight streaming through the window, seemed chiselled from stone. His eyes, piercing and expectant, fixed on the figure.
" Were you followed?" he asked, his voice low and measured, like a ticking clock.
The figure hesitated, then responded, "No."
Zhang Han's gaze never wavered, his eyes boring into the darkness. "Delilah Chen, Is it her?" he said, his voice dripping with an air of mystery, like a whispered secret as he picked the file from the table again.
His heart began to thump against his ribs.
" Yes, dad," a familiar, deep, soothing masculine voice replied, sending a hint of warmth through the chill of the night.
" Are you sure she is your sister?"
The figure sat, shrouded in darkness, its presence seeming to draw the shadows closer. " Yes dad, I've been on this case since middle school"
Zhang Han's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with unspoken questions.
He sighed.
" How long do you intend to be undercover?" he asked, his tone absently as he stared at Delilah's pictures in the file.
The figure thought for a while before responding, "Till I graduate high school, I'll be able to approach her before then" he said, its voice barely audible as he spoke lazily.
Zhang Han's nod was almost imperceptible, his eyes narrowed slightly. " I'll report to the old man then, I can't tell your mother now, or she'll ruin the plan. But be warned, you must not blow your cover. Keep your sister close, and your wits closer. I don't want anyone else to know about this"
" Affirmative" the figure reassured.
Zhang Han still felt unease building in his heart, he sighed and turned his chair to face the window, his gaze fixed on the moon,
" Just keep an eye out for your sister… since you've found her, it is your responsibility to make sure nothing happens to her… especially during this time." A flicker of melancholy danced in his eyes, like a ghostly whisper.
The figure rose, its movements swift and silent like a ghost, and he bowed deeply. "Dad, don't worry, I'll keep my sister safe." His eyes shinning with determination.
The two spoke in hushed tones, their words hanging in the air like secrets.
" I have to return to the dormitory now, dad" the figure said.
Zhang Han nodded," Dismissed" he answered.
Then, the figure vanished into the night, leaving Zhang Han to his thoughts. The darkness swallowed the sound of footsteps, and the camp slumbered on.
