Chapter 23: Lamb Becomes Wolf

Two Years Ago

There was a beeping in Rakesh’s ears that pierced through the darkness. It became louder and louder until it finally forced him to open his eyes. He deliriously surveyed his surroundings, noticing medical equipment and various tubes that seemed to lead straight to him. He attempted to adjust his position in bed, but the scorching pain in his shoulder stopped him dead in his tracks. Rakesh was barely able to contain his cry of pain as he lay back down, defeated. That was when his door opened and in rushed the familiar face of Martin, who looked relieved to the point of tears to see his friend awake.

“You’re awake!” Martin said breathlessly. “I thought we were gonna lose you for a bit there!”

“What-what happened?” Rakesh rasped. “Where’s Mark? Tyson? Are they okay?”

“We’re all just fine, thanks to you.” Martin assured him. “We’d probably be dead if it wasn’t for you.”

“How long have I been here?” Rakesh was almost afraid to know the answer.
