It had been many years since they had been assigned exclusive guards and servants to the Princess, but to believe it merely lasted weeks before their first big failure of letting her get stolen from right under their nose, the humiliation and regret was something they both suspected they would never be able to outlive.
It had been a glorious time, they had been the strongest Demons in servitude of Inari after she had killed their former employer as he had foolishly tried to overtake her territory, Demonic contracts cannot be broken and they had been living in constant humiliation after signing their contract as young foolish demons who had barely gained intelligence, they wanted to see the mortal realm, experience the life and he had promised them he could find a way for them to live there, in turn they signed away their free will before they had realised, the debt they owed Inari for freeing them and instead of killing them did she provide them a place to belong.
They had intended to prove to her that saving them would be worthwhile and they had trained extremely hard for many years, until the day came where Inari called them in and requested them to be personal servants and protectors of her daughter, the pride they had felt could not be expressed in words, they had been acknowledged for their hard work and given a position that would allow them to fully prove that saving them hadn't been a waste of Inaris effort.
just to fail almost immediately, by all means they struggled understanding why Inari hadn't simply executed and gotten rid of them on the spot for their failure, but both of them had a soul contract with Fiara hence they knew her spirit was still alive somewhere, otherwise they would have perished themselves, Pure demons are spiritual beings, the mortal body is just a shell, ancient demons like Inari is capable of making themselves a pseudo physical body to inhabit otherwise the mortal realm would reject them, most demons are not strong enough for that and have to rely on borrowing a mortal shell to inhabit earth and the other lower realms, Ash and Desmond had during the time with Inari gained enough strength to make their own shell, but it was nowhere near as powerful as what Inari could do.
They had once again ended up at the same stupid library again and once again it had been a dead end, only humans, which the first time hadn't seemed odd, but after getting Inaris message to not dismiss the library once more they had noticed that not even the super natural beings got close, ofcourse it is just a library but they seemed quite happy to intermingle everywhere else within human society but somehow they seemed to stay away from the library almost as if they were being scarred away from treading on someone else's territory, but they had checked every time they arrived there was nothing but one of the two librarians and a bunch of kids, they had roughly been hovering around for a full week now, with nothing unusual, they had decided to not enter yet mainly because they were afraid she wouldn't show if they made their presence known if it indeed was her.
suddenly the energy flared it was brief and very short but it was definitely there, rushing towards the library they watched as a small human kid left, they wanted to go in but he blocked them and told them that Kira was closing the library and they were too late, if they wanted to borrow some books they had to come back tomorrow, Ash personally was getting frustrated with the kid but he was very insistent that they should wait until tomorrow, this little pest of human was taking up precious time to get to the only lead they had, she before she was about to throw the kid away Desmond stopped her her and gave her a knowing look.
"Sister the tiny kid just confirmed the only one in there is the librarian, the energy us long gone so you already know what you would find, there is no point of getting on the bad side of said librarian by hurting the kid, how about we simply humor him and wait to see which of the 2 individuals are going to appear to us, we have been looking for decades there is no reason to rush now"
Ash gave Desmond a dejected look and calmed down, looking towards the kid who was still looking at them with a stubborn expression, She gave him a smile.
"Sorry little one, I was being a bit too impatient with getting to the location a book of my interest might be acquired, I will come back tomorrow so I don't bother Kira"
the kid looked at Ash with a doubting gaze until he gave a self satisfied smile, and turned around and left.
