In the Woods Somewhere

Hamish never really saw the point on legends, they are stories made for children who believe in magic. But then magic comes to him, first in his dreams and then in the form of a boy...or a wolf. Hamish knows there's something wrong with the town, he knows there are things being hidden on plan sight, but what he didn't expect was that making a search through the towns past would get him to find out about his own past, about the creatures that hide in the woods and above all: About who he truly is and to whom his heart truly belongs to. Hamish would find out the hard way that sometimes love is the biggest of curses and that he was more afraid of loving a man than becoming a wolf

The wolf of my nightmare

POV: Hamish

The first time I saw a wolf I was still too young to understand that it was dangerous, to be honest I found it actually pretty. The pitch black of it's fur seemed like an infinity, as if that wolf had drained all the color of the woods and now it looked at me with even darker eyes, studying my face as if I was guilt of something, but which crime could a child like me have committed besides, of course, being born? Now I was seeing it again, but it looked different, it was part of the woods, part of the shadows. It looked at me as if it was trying to figure out if I had changed too, I couldn't say if I had...I heard a scream, in the woods somewhere and when I looked back at the animal it was gone. My feet were moving before I could even think about it, I was running, not sure how I had gotten to the woods but there I was, running among the trees as my sweat blond curls covered my view. I ran and I ran not knowing where I was going, but soon I found the source of the noise: A boy and another wolf. A boy standing alone on the middle of the tall trees that covered our heads, he was immobilized, around him a wolf as white as ice walked in circles making sure he wouldn't try to run

The wolf was hunting and the boy was breathing irregularly, pure prey instinct. He was wearing a long white dress that flew around, strangely there was no wind. His right eye had the color of a honeycomb, his left eye though was blue, not just any blue, no, it reminded me of a frozen lake just before cracking. His hair was black but the tips and the fringe were died in blonde, it almost reached his shoulder but...but what truly caught my attention was the pearl necklace that covered his neck, it seemed oddly familiar to me but I couldn't say for sure where I had seen it before "Help" his voice came out cracking, a whisper carried away by the wind. I tried to get closer and the animal allowed me to, making me feel like I was in control, but when I got close, close enough to hear his accelerated heart beat something happened: My right hand moved itself scratching his throat with dark long claws that I didn't have before, the pearl necklace broke and the pearls fell on the grass one by one, all stained with blood, his blood, the one that also stained my hand. I could heard myself screaming as I knelt down and held him on my arms trying to stop the bleeding but the claws only made me hurt him more, for some miracle he was still breathing and able to talk even though his voice was too low, like the sound the wind makes as it swings the dead leaves of autumn trees "Find me, you need to find me" he begged taking his right hand to my cheek "Where are you?" "Find me" he repeated and then coughed getting blood all over my face

That was the first nightmare, I woke up scared, sweating, my chest was going up and down, away from my control, I took my hand to my face and felt the water left there by the tears, a single question haunting me on the back of my mind: Who was he? People say you can not dream with someone unless you know them but yet I dreamed of him and now, now I didn't know what to do "Hamish" I heard my mom calling "Hamish?" she tried again knocking on the door "Are you there?" "Just a sec" I used the back of my hand to get rid of the tears and the blanket to try to dry my face "There's someone here for you" I looked at the time on my phone, realizing I had overslept, but that wasn't all, it was filled with missing calls from my girlfriend: Wendy Daniels "Morning mom" I said opening my door very carefully, praying that she wouldn't notice how agitated I was "Good Morning Hamish" it was clear on her voice that I wasn't as subtle as I wanted to be "Wendy is here, I'll give you sometime to get changed" I looked at her for a second as she left me alone, though she would probably wanna talk later. I knew I had been adopt and usually it didn't bother me, Shanelle Myers was the most amazing woman I knew and I was glad I could call her mom, even if my brother liked to make my life impossible, but there were moments that it felt strange, like when I looked at her and saw how different we were. How dark her eyes and hair were, while I was pale, blond, with the bluest eyes, and I looked so fragile, nothing like that woman who always seemed ready to take over the world

But most of all, what was bothering me on that moment was the thought of the boy from my dreams, I couldn't help but wonder if he was someone from my past, someone from my biological family. I knew it was best to just let it go but I wanted to know more. Instead of asking, instead of keep wondering, I got changed as fast as I could and made my way downstairs, where she was waiting for me, my girlfriend and best friend "Hi babe" there was something accusing about her voice but I chose to ignore it and smiled, it was a relief to see her, I knew it was just a dream but it felt too real for me to just ignore it "Hey" I greeted putting my arms around her. Wendy was definitely not the type of girl that went out with a guy like me but I didn't want to question my luck, we were friends basically since we were babies and I guess we got used to each other's presence. Of course it was still a surprise when she kissed me on my 15th birthday party but it was nice though, we made a good pair. And she was without a doubt stunning, with dark skin, nut eyes and long blonde dreadlocks that highlighted her face "I am sorry" I said right away, after she let go of me "I hadn't seen your messages...or the calls...I lost track of time" "Yeah, I noticed that sleeping beauty" I chuckled as she raised an eyebrow "You forgot what day is today right?" my heart almost jumped out of chest, something I always feared was people being disappointed at me, on that moment the first thing that came into my mind was that I had forgotten our anniversary and I really didn't want to let her down

"Don't worry, it's not what you are thinking" she assured me, looking into my eyes as if she was reading every single one of my thoughts, I wondered if she could guess that I had had a nightmare "Hamish" she pronounced my name as if it was longer than it actually was and put one hand on each of my shoulders "It's the town's anniversary and Zacharias is driving me crazy, not even Billie can stand him today and you decided to sleep" I immediately took a hand to my forehead "Oh my God" she nodded "Oh my God" I repeated my words and she repeated her gesture "He's going to kill me and use my ashes as decoration for the carnival" "Yep" Wendy said crossing her arms above her chest as if the idea was funny somehow. Our town was called Witchatle, in honor of the legend of the Witch, the story said that a long time ago our town was a desert caused by the curse of Atlas Reinwald who was chased during the inquisition but never found. Many, many years later, her decedent Rosemary Atlas Reynolds was murdered and buried on the soil where the curse had been put and somehow plants started growing again only so that a new town could exist. To be honest, I had never believed the legends but everything on Witchtale seemed like a thematic park and of course that every year there was a carnival to celebrate Rose, and how she allegedly broke the curse, and every year since we were 11 my friend Zach wanted to help, the years went by and now it was his first time organizing, so obviously our entire group, of four people, had to be part of it

Zach always had a connection with the supernatural, or at least a passion. He loved everything that mentioned ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches. He dedicated his life into knowing as much aleatory facts as he possibly could, and lived by the believe that 'All legends are true' so being in charge of the carnival was like a dream come true for him, and maybe a bit of a nightmare to us, but I was happy for him, even though Zach would probably kill me for being late. As for Billie, they were the newest member of our group. Billie Dean Day used to live on South Korea where their parents had gone to start a new life, but blinded by the American Dream, Billie decided to come to the states, where they end up living with their Godmother Melanie Murray, here on Witchtale "Okay...Just keep it cool" Wendy advised me as she parked her car. We had gotten to the center of the town "I am sure he's fine. Zach won't judge" we both knew that was lie, he had been talking about this day for months and was perfectionist besides a bit of a control freak "Yeah, you are right" we both knew she wasn't "It has to be higher" was the first thing I head Zach saying as Wendy and I approached. Zacharias Johnson, with black skin, dark brown dreadlocks that weren't short but not long enough to reach his shoulder, there were several people I knew that were interested on his jaw line and made man face, but he simply ignored it. His passion seemed to be only...the supernatural "It's high enough!" Billie yelled as they held the decorated poster that should be on the entrance of the carnival

Billie tended to call a lot of attention as well, you couldn't expect less from their extravagant clothes and colorful hair, light pink, light purple and aqua green, to be honest their hair kind of reminded me of cotton candy "Thank God you two are here" Billie smiled looking at us "Could you please tell him that if I put this higher birds are gonna start hitting it!" Zach crossed his arms with an inflexible expression "Then, I suppose it will add the dramatic element we need" I didn't have to look at Billie to know they rolled eyes and sighed "Hamish get up there" he ordered making it kind of hard to say no "I want Billie to see the sign from my perspective" 'Fine, but it won't change my mind" they answered as we switched places and I saw myself on the top of a staircase "Okay..." I heard Billie saying down there "Maybe it would be better if it was a bit higher...but not as high as you were saying" I moved the sign a bit but then another person joined the people down there, I couldn't be sure of who it was, all I heard was a voice "Hey, I brought the things you asked" "Thank you Jake!" Zach said as if he was blessing Jake, whoever that was. When I looked down, I found out, Jake...so that was his name...the name of the boy I had seen in my dreams. He looked up at me with a curious smile...I had found him...it was too much to assimilate...next thing I heard was Zach's furious scream...I had dropped the sign
