Chapter 64

“I wonder who that could be.” I rose from the couch and opened the door.

A plump man in a trench coat, who was clutching a briefcase to his chest, stood at the door. “Are you going to let me in?” he asked.

“Who are you?” I demanded.

He wiped his mustache with his free hand. “I’m your parents’ lawyer, and you’ll want to hear what I have to say.”

I gestured for him to come inside. He then sat down on the couch across from where Stefan and I were sitting.

Stefan tilted his head toward me. “And he would be?”

“My parents’ lawyer. Apparently, there’s something he’s dying to tell me.” I grabbed another cookie and started eating it without telling the new arrival to help himself. Manners be damned!

The lawyer opened his briefcase and handed me a stapled packet. “I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. Your parents were my favorite people. Your dad told the funniest jokes, and your mom had an infectious smile.”

“Can we skip the banter?” I spat.
