She huffed. “What’s wrong, Maximillian? Do you disagree with the plan?”

Yeah. There was a big problem with Katherine leaving with one of Stefan’s friends and living in exile on Spunkforia, which was an island territory on the outskirts of Magnifico. They had their own government though, and according to Kyle and Stefan, it was also the place where a lot of nonmagical people had fled to.

Acting calm was my only option, because I couldn’t be selfish. Katherine needed to do what was necessary to survive. Having another unwanted encounter with Sirch and the secret police wolves was enough to make me cringe.

She grabbed my hand. “I’m going to miss you, too.”

“Life can be so unfair sometimes.”

“At least I’m still alive.”

I forced a small grin.

“I’m sorry about your parents,” Katherine continued.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to continue.”

She gritted her teeth. “Nobody but you and Stefan can know where I am. Not even Raquel or Taylor.”
