He owned an inconspicuous car which easily blended in with the city. That place was naturally his hiding place.

He harbored a hatred towards women, regarding his childhood and teen years when he did not receive care from older females in his household, and what he likely received was abuse and humiliation. This led to his inability to establish normal relationships with the opposite gender after becoming an adult.

There was a year in between when he didn't commit any crime, signifying that he was either imprisoned, ill, or enjoyed a period of a male-female relationship that put a stop to his criminal activities. However, in the end, he couldn't satisfy his desires and went on to commit another crime.

The fact that he had accomplices is not ruled out. But any accomplice would surely be weaker than him and in a subordinate position.
