Oliver blinked innocently as he tugged at Noah's finger.
Noah spoke indifferently, "You don't have to mind them. It's not like they will follow us inside."
Oliver nodded, agreeing with Noah. He glanced at Ruby who was still annoyed but soon begrudgingly allowed it.
His little feet hurried over to catch up with Ruby's speed.
Noah wasn't in a hurry. He walked leisurely behind them while squinting his eyes from time to time watching the gestures of the bodyguards.
The gears in his mind move noiselessly, conjuring a hypothesis about Heather's family.
Oliver and Noah sat across Ruby in the living room. Their eyes continuously wandered around.
They were a bit bewildered by the lively and colorful design as it didn't fit Ruby's persona.
Ruby didn't design it on purpose because of them, right?
They shuddered from disgust. In just a matter of seconds, Oliver and Noah developed a strong dislike for the whole apartment. It was stark different from how dark the place they used to live in was.
The vibrant atmosphere was an eyesore for them. It would be more comfortable if Ruby could adjust the color.
Lest they couldn't get used to it even if they tried to.
Ruby stroked her chin, pondering over how to cohabitate with the children. Technically speaking, Noah and Oliver couldn't be put in the children category because they were too mature for their own sake.
Therefore, she came to the conclusion that she could treat it the same as having friends who slept over at her house for a definite time.
Uh-huh. That works.
This way, there would no pressure between them and Ruby could be at ease around the kids.
Ruby's stiff shoulders relaxed. She stated flatly, "You can choose the rooms, except the middle room on the second floor. That's mine."
There were a total of four rooms with one master bedroom that coincidentally was Ruby's own room. The other three were a guestroom. Two were downstairs and the last one was right next to Ruby's.
Oliver easily decided, "Then we will take the one next to yours."
"We?"
Ruby's gaze alternated between the two of them.
"Are you going to share the room?"
"Yes."
"Why? Are you afraid of sleeping alone?"
Oliver's face faintly flushed, "There's no way! We are just worried that you will do something without us knowing."
Ruby was speechless, "Really? I'm not as bad as you think I am."
Noah interjected at the right moment, avoiding responding to Ruby's statement, "We felt uneasy if we are separated."
They were still unsure whether she was truly harmless or not, but they also couldn't offend her, much less provoke her.
To show his sincerity, however, he wouldn't lie. So Noah didn't say she was kind nor bad.
"Besides, we're still young. It's not a problem to share the room."
Ruby acknowledged the truth in his words. It kinda made sense.
They were kids and they just arrived in a brand new environment, they were bound to feel afraid. Being together was nice to lessen their fear and gradually lower their wariness.
Ruby understood. She didn't press further and nodded.
"Okay. It's up to you."
She walked over to them then patted their heads lightly, making the twins stiffen in place.
Ruby giggled, smiling cheekily, she said "Go get some rest because tomorrow will be a busy day."
After that, she left them alone in the spacious living room, who was quietly sobering themselves from the unexpected familiar way of touch.
It took some time for Oliver to snap out of his daze. He held Noah's hand and briskly made his way to their room.
They quickly washed up before wearing a new set of pair pajamas Ruby bought for them. Noah wore white pajamas with a cute piggy drawing that looked like it was quivering in fright on his shirt, while Oliver wore similar white pajamas with a fierce tiger drawing that was howling with its mouth open as if the tiger wanted to swallow the whole piglet down to its stomach.
The two looked at each other shirts dumbfoundedly, thinking that their role was somewhat switched.
Then they laughed so hard that tears came out of the corner of their eyes.
Although it was scary to step into a new world, although the future was covered with a thick greyish fog, and although they were dying from the uncertainty of their life, they felt happy from the bottom of their hearts.
Because they still get to live for another day with another possible path that was wide open for them to tread. They could turn over their fate for the better, finding countless millions of happiness.
Now, Noah and Oliver had the courage to start dreaming for their future.
It was a pleasant and satisfying feeling.
They lay in the middle of the bed, facing the white ceiling. Their hands were clasped together tightly.
Oliver whispered, "Noah."
"En."
"If.... if later you become someone big, don't leave me."
Oliver had always known how smart Noah was. He didn't doubt that Noah could do anything if he get the opportunity to do so.
However, Oliver was different. He wasn't smart, and he was weak to the point he became afraid of being baggage for Noah. He was scared he would drag his brother down to a bottomless hell.
Noah was silent. Then he said, "I would never."
His voice was warm and comforting, "We are twins. We can't be separated."
"We only have each other. I will protect you, and you will protect me."
"You can't leave me too."
It was rare for Noah to spit out words afterwords, but as a twin, he had a deep understanding of Oliver. Noah knew he was discouraged and felt inferior.
Noah calmly said, "It's okay. You have the same blood as me. You have your own ability."
Oliver finally calm down a little. He sweetly smiled, "I know! I'm a great person! You shouldn't praise me too much."
Noah clamped his mouth and turn over from Oliver. He was ashamed of being a brother of this bear kid.
Nevertheless, why is Oliver's behavior strangely identical to how Ruby shamelessly broad over herself?
Indeed, bad apples shouldn't be eaten.
