Chapter 38

Enrique gave me an hour off that afternoon to go buy my train ticket. I would leave the next morning. This evening would be my last at the restaurant. While I looked forward to being with Arielle once more, having a little time off to myself, sleeping in a normal bed and figuring out what I would do with the rest of my life, I was a little sad that I would be leaving these people. We finished our work that night, cleaning up and closing the place and everyone said their goodbyes.

I spent my last night sleeping on the cot in the kitchen. Early the next morning I was awakened by a group of people singing. I shook the sleep out of my head, figuring it must be the leftover sounds from a dream carrying over into my consciousness. But, no, I was awake now and I could still hear it. It was coming from the alley behind the restaurant. I got up and walked to the door, trying to imagine what group of people could possibly be singing in the back alley at seven in the morning.
