Working Within Limitations

Lukas was badly injured. I checked through the things I was allowed to provide at my level. At this level I could only provide skills and items. The threat from Jared was very real I thought and I wondered how we could keep every one safe. If it was me and in a game I would just simply kill Jared off and be done with it. I knew Lukas wouldn't agree to this though. He would never agree to just killing someone, even someone like Jared. I searched what I knew of this world. It used Essence not mana or ki for cultivation, so what could I use to help Lukas when his essence absorption was so low. As I thought about I realized something. Technology worked in all worlds!

I originally came from a world of technology. I hadn't really thought about it much because I was enthralled by the power of Essence and all the RPG and magic games I had played, but I was sci-fi junkie also. As I scanned the knowledge I had gained about the universes I realized that Technology wasn't as limited as I had thought. It worked everywhere. It required no Essence, Mana, Ki, or Faith just a power source usually.

I went through the many sci-fi games I had played and slowly I began to get some ideas. I needed something to heal Lukas and that he could use to improve his lot in life. I found one thing that would meet my current requirements, nanites I used nearly half the power I had absorbed from the amulet to form the nanites within Lukas's bloodstream. Immediately the bots began to work to repair the damage that had been done to him. I watched as they began to repair his internal structure at the molecular level and slowly over the course of a few hours he was pieced back together.

It had taken nearly four hours, but Lukas was now fine. All his bones had been repaired and his internal injuries were healed. He didn't even have any bruises. He opened his eyes and I could see the alleyway again. It was lucky no one else came up on him as he laid there unconscious.

"That really hurt." was the first thing Lukas said as he woke up.

"I'm sorry. Jared was a lot stronger than I thought." I apologized to him for the pain he went through.

"Did it work? Did you get the power from the amulet?" He inquired.

"Yes it did. I also gave you a new gift while you were out. I'll tell you about the new addition to your body. I added something called nanites to your body. These nanites can heal you from injuries and can be used to alter your body. We'll use them to make you stronger and faster and they can even form little machines called nanobots that can be used outside the body." I explained.

"That's awesome." He sated as he looked at his body.

I could tell he was impressed at the rate he healed as he realized he had no injuries. Even the scars he had possessed from the previous beatings were gone.

"We need to get back to the orphanage, and I can assign the nanites to help you get stronger. I think it would best be done in your room though. I'm not sure if it will hurt or wht might happen so privacy will be a must." I told him.

"I also need to tell you that Jared has threatened the orphanage and all the people you love." I wanted him to be prepared in case Jared showed up.

"Then we have to get back quickly and I have to get stronger fast." was his simple reply.

We went straight back to the orphanage and Lukas went to his room and shut the door. He turned the lock, something he never really did, and laid down on the bed. I wished him luck as I executed the command to begin strengthening and enhancing his body. The nanites began their work. I watched again as the nanites began to tear apart his bones and replace them with a kind of laminate and composite material. They fundamentally altered the structure at the molecular level to make the bones many times stronger than they had been before. The pain was pretty intense. Lukas simply gritted his teeth and lay on the bed enduring the pain. He never made a sound other than the occasional grunt.

Finally, the bone reconstruction was done and the nanites moved on to the next project. They began to destroy and rebuild his nervous system. I didn't understand exactly what they were doing to the nervous system, but I knew it was making the nerves conduct faster. The pathways changed and looked like circuits in a way, but I could tell they were many times faster than they were at transmitting impulses. I knew this would increase his reaction speed.

The process continued throughout the night. Lukas's entire body was completely transformed. bones, nerves, muscles, brain, organs, and even his skin was improved. Throughout it all he suffered pain of various kinds and he simply endured. I hated the pain he was going through, but where there is immense gain, there is usually pain also. A kind of equivalent exchange. As the morning sun began to rise the changes were finally completed, Lukas drifted off to slumber.

Lukas woke up around noon and he went to get out of bed. His body moved differently than it had before. He fell when he tried to get up as he wasn't used to his new strength, or the way his body moved now. He had to make every move exaggerated at first, but it didn't take long for his improved mind and body to adapt to the changes. He went over to the mirror and looked at his reflection. His eyes widened in shock at the sight he saw looking back at him.
