The Magic Series Codex

As soon as the banquet concluded, a brown haired girl called for all the Slytherin first years to gather around her right outside the Great Hall.

"Congratulations! I'm Prefect Gemma Farley, and i'm delighted to welcome you to Slytherin House." She started, rather amiably.

"I'll be showing you how to get to your dormitories, as well as the common room so please follow me!" She concluded, leading the first years towards a door on the right side of the entrance hall.

Once they got past the door, they descended stone staircases and entered deep into the dungeons of the castle, only stopping in front of a stone wall with a statue of a green eyed snake engraved on it.

"Noble" Gemma spoke to the stone wall, after waiting for all the first years to catch up.

The stone wall immediately vibrated and slid to the side, revealing a passageway to the Slytherin common room.

'It's honestly quite…eerie.' Gavin thought as soon as he stepped into the common room.

It was a dungeon-like room with dim greenish lamps and chairs. A fire was crackling under an elaborately carved mantelpiece at the end of the room. Multiple chairs and tables were scattered about, some with wizard chess boards. Overall, it had quite the gothic ambiance; something that Gavin was not used to.

Gemma explained that boys could not enter the girls dorms but that girls could go to the boys dorms as soon as they reached the end of the common room, much to the dissatisfaction of some of the boys. She then led the boys towards their dorm rooms. Gavin was placed with Brandon, Malfoy, and Theodore Nott,. Brandon picked the bed right next to Gavin, and Malfoy's bed was opposite Gavin's.

Malfoy immediately came up to Gavin and Brandon once they were left alone.

"Hi, I'm Draco Malfoy, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He introduced himself, stretching his hands out for a handshake.

"Brandon Pendragon. Nice to meet you." Brandon replied immediately, smiling amiably.

"Gavin Everhart, a pleasure." Gavin followed suit and replied cordially.

"Thank god there aren't any mud bloods or half-bloods in Slytherin this year. Those scum dirty our noble Slytherin house. We ought to stick together you know, best to surround yourself with the right people d'you know what I mean?" Malfoy said eagerly.

"Right, I definitely know what you mean." Brandon responded, nodding his head and humming in affirmation. Gain raised his eyebrows, surprised by Brandon's stance on blood purity. He mused that it was probably his mother's doing.

"Yeah sure." He also responded, yawning exasperatedly. He could care less about the blood purity nonsense. As long as it didn't interfere with his life, he didn't give two fucks about it. Though he thought it was wrong, he wasn't going to go out of his way to fix it. It was too much of a hassle for him, and he wasn't that righteous.

Malfoy then talked with Gavin and Brandon some more, and introduced Theodore to them. Gavin then waited for everyone to fall asleep.

Once they did, he grabbed his briefcase and went to the bathroom so no one could see him. He then placed it on the ground, handle facing him and opened it before stepping into it.

Once he was inside, he was greeted by a rather…peculiar sight. He saw Aelia in her cat form sitting on one of the chairs, wearing half moon spectacles and covering herself in a blanket. She was reading a book and looked serious as she read it.

[I see you've made yourself comfortable] Gavin laughed as soon as he saw her.

[Indeed. Your room is the most homey I've seen.] She chuckled, dropping her book and removing her spectacles.

Gavin immediately walked up to her and grabbed her, much to Aelia's delight. He then sat down on one of the chairs and told her about his day as he stroked her. He then asked her about the Pendragons, causing Aelia to frown.

[There's actually still a Pendragon in Britain? That's a surprise.] She said, raising her eyebrows.

[Why's that surprising?] Gavin asked.

[Long story short, they were nearly wiped out during your Grandfather's days. I'm surprised some actually escaped the massacre]

[Wait what? How? By who?] Gavin replied, dumbfounded. What was going on here? It seemed like anyone remotely powerful was almost always dying.

[Don't worry about it for now.] Aelia replied sternly.

Gavin clicked his tongue in annoyance. Aelia was still treating him like a kid, and he absolutely abhorred it.

[Can they control dragons?] He asked a few moments later, trying to take his mind off Aelia's persistence on not speaking.

Aelia looked at Gavin intently, before replying [Yes, they can control higher dragons. Though they should have lost that ability during the massacre, they probably still can since some apparently escaped.]

[Right, I see.] Gavin hummed.

He then dropped Aelia on the sofa, pulled out the inquisitor and muttered, "Accio Diary."

A pitch black diary soon flew into his hands from the direction of his room. Gavin then cut his hands using his wand and dropped his blood on the diary, causing it to vibrate softly. He then stroked the diary's spine 9 times and tapped the front of the diary with his wand, muttering "Aparecium."

Immediately, the diary's color changed from black to brown and revealed a string of texts on the books cover. Gavin smiled as he read the front of the book; it said:

'The Magic Series Codex.'

'A Compendium of the Advanced Applications and Usages of Theoretical Arithmancy and Numerology.'

'By Gavin Lucas Everhart.'

It was the base framework for his future inventions that he had been constructing since he learnt how to write in this world. It contained his ideas, theories, and speculations on the way Arithmancy could be used in magic and magical arts.

Yes, Gavin had not completely wasted his 11 years in the wizarding world. He had read every single book or research paper on Arithmancy and Numerology he could buy or find in his house so he could deepen his knowledge on the subject.

Currently, Gavin was sure he was on par, if not more knowledgeable on the subject than even the current Hogwarts Arithmancy Professor, Septima Vector; though he was very confident that it was the latter.

This way, he was able to understand a few crucial things about the subjects.

Arithmancy is a magical discipline that studies the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology. Numerology is a branch of Arithmancy that focuses on combining numbers in various ways.

One thing that Gavin noticed was the fact that every single Arithmancer was focusing on using Arithmancy as a means of divination or fortune telling, much to his disgust. He scoffed at the short sightedness of wizards because he knew that Arithmancy was capable of so much more; they were ignoring the practical side of the subject completely and not using the subject to study what numbers were created for to begin with, measuring.

Mathematics originated because of the need to measure quantities and the earliest mathematicians were purely metrologists. Gavin thought that in this world where magical energy exists, the fact that arithmancers have completely ignored finding a way to measure the mystical energy baffled him. As a mathematician at heart, it seriously irked him that there was no system to measure how much magical energy a person could conduct so it was the very first thing he planned on inventing.

A system that measures magical energy in general and can be used to determine a wizard's power level.

Asides from that, Gavin also thought that if numbers had magical properties, what was stopping arithmetic operators from having magical properties? He had a hunch that signs like +,-, etc had magical properties which could be exploited.

Gavin was sure that with the magical properties of arithmetic operators, stuff like spell amplification, debuffing and even multi-casting could be possible. It was certainly crazy to even think about. Multicasting in Harry Potter? Was such a thing even possible?

Well, Gavin was a scientist and mathematician. It was his job to investigate the seemingly 'crazy' and he was going to do just that.

All of this was just the surface of Gavin's theories. He was even going as far as wondering whether limits, functions and calculus could be used in magic. He wondered what kind of applications those things would have.

Gavin grinned as he read his compendium. He cracked his knuckles, stood up and looked at the door to his room and laboratory.

'Let's get to work…'
