So, Wes might have been prejudiced in thinking it, but he believes that Randy’s mother was white, though it could have also been black and just following her husband. Settlers don’t care so much about blood, but to say that it doesn’t matter would be a lie. Alone or together, they reached Z’ilu or America and probably saw that people don’t look well on half-bloods. They looked around and they did something that touches Wes in a private, immensely painful way: they abandoned him.
Eret, the mechanic, took him in and they continued to move around a lot. People don’t look kindly on Randy and that made it hard. Eret said once that he was lucky everybody needed his services, otherwise, they couldn’t have afforded the constant shuffling. It breaks Wes’s heart just thinking about it. Eret, though, accepted it as a fact of life and went on. They eventually settled in Haven Thirty-eight.
