Chapter 24

She knew she screamed as they fell, more from elation than fear. It felt what she imagined flying would feel like. She’d also let Ryuu’s hand go as soon as they had hit the water, figuring it was easier to swim with two hands than one.

The water was definitely cold, almost freezing. If she had been tired at all, Jayde wouldn’t have been anymore.

Jayde swam up to the surface, spluttering for air as they’d gone deeper from the high jump than she thought they would. She pushed her hair out of her face, looking around. She got a couple good gulps of air as she admired the bright moon that wasn’t quite full yet, kicking her legs to stay afloat. She then looked around for Ryuu, sure that he would have come up for air by now too. But even spinning in a complete circle, looking for him, Jayde couldn’t find him.
