A Mystery!

{Hogwarts Library, Hogwarts, Scotland}

{09:43 AM, 8th Jan 1992}

"...is one of the simplest and at the same time a very complex spell, the Aviforis spell, in theory, allows you to transform small inanimate objects into birds, now one of the main reasons to focus on the spell is the body weight or mass of the spell target, the larger the target, you need to imagine and concentrate to split it into multiple birds, so for starters..." Professor McGonagall stopped writing the formula on the board and flicked her wand toward a box in the corner.

The box floated and started going through the space in between the class, in front of each student a small wooden block floated down. "We will start with this block of wood, its mass is small enough that you only need to concentrate on creating one bird, now the wand movement for the spell is the slightly elongated 'infinity' with an upwards flick in the end." She picked up her own wand and elegantly demonstrated the spell.

The small wooden block easily transformed into a small canary, as the bird started chirping, students around the classroom stared at it in wonder before a few eager ones picked up their wands to try the spell.

To be honest, Harry loved transfiguration the most of all magics, the ability to manipulate matter was fascinating, and it turns out to be even better when one wasn't waving his wand like a lunatic.

"Dammit, why is this soo harrrdd..." Harry heard Ron whine breaking him out of his thoughts, he looked at the small brown block of wood and picked up his own wand, Harry had read up on several transfiguration spells, and he had read more major spells for inanimate to animate transformation, but this Aviforis spell was a little bit different, it was a targeted spell that forces the caster into a constraint, like from the species of the bird to its color and size is fixed, it is meant to be a teaching spell so Harry decided to dissect the spell.

"Aviforis~" he enchanted clearly, he performed the correct wand movement and watched the block transform into a perfect canary just like Professor McGonagall, he ignored the cursing of several people from beside him and waved his wand again towards the bird.

'Reparifarge~' he thought and the Canary collapsed onto itself with a squeak and became the block of wood once again. He concentrated and did the exact same thing as last time, he did the correct wand movement and let his mana flow, "Aviforis~"

The Canary popped up once again but this time instead of yellow it was blue in color, Harry stared at it for a second before using the Reparifarge spell once again to get the block of wood back. He was about to experiment again when Daphne's cursing stopped him.

"You're such a cheat, can you stop showing off," She huffed as she glared at her block of wood that somehow had a canary tail coming out from it from one end which had stripes of yellow and blue going along its length.

"How is this my fault?" Harry asked innocently and Daphne glared at him, Harry marveled at how much she had changed in the months they had spent together, she isn't the same stoic kid, at least not in front of him, much, she still uses Occlumency a lot of the time but Harry could read her more easily now like right now she was pissed at him, cause seeing him experiment with the spell had broken her concentration.

She glared at him one last time before she concentrated on the task once again, Blaize, on the other hand, leaned into Harry from his right side and whispered, "Why do you have to piss her off, now she'll snap at us, anyway, how did you do the spell so quickly, seriously you need to spend more time outside the Library,"

Harry shrugged and looked back at the block once again, he concentrated and did the spell once again this time focusing on making multiple birds who are smaller than the usual.

"Aviforis~"

The block transformed and collapsed onto itself as two canaries drenched in the blood and gore of the third appeared in front of him, Harry grimaced and Professor McGonagall stepped to the table at the exact same time examining the mess on the table.

*Chirp**Chirp*

"Reparifarge~"

Harry ignored the cute chirping of the mini canaries and reversed the transfiguration, Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow at the display and spoke, "Mr. Jackson, while I admit you are gifted at the art, but as I said in my first class, transfiguration is a very dangerous branch of magic, the spell you are trying to modify can indeed create multiple canaries but the spell was built-in with several constraints in its formulae, you need to have a minimum amount of mass for each canary otherwise the spell would fail." Harry listened to Professor McGonagall and nodded, it made sense, the bird species was fixed and so was its minimum size otherwise the spell would unravel itself, after all, it was meant as a teaching tool for first years.

Harry thought about it and then pointed his wand at the block once again, he concentrated on the image and manipulated a string of mana through his wand.

'Avisipter~'

The block of wood transformed into 5 very small canary birds that flew all around him while chirping, Professor McGonagall stared at him for a bit before she spoke, "Excellent spell Mr. Jackson, would you mind staying after class, it seems like we have something to discuss." and with that Professor moved to the next seat.

"What is up with you and teachers giving you detention," Daphne asked with a raised eyebrow, Harry stared at her right back before he grumbled out, "She didn't give me detention, we are going to just have a chat, maybe some tea!"

As Daphne grumbled and went back to her block of wood, Harry looked at the five canaries flying around him, 'Maybe it is time to ask the Professors for some reading materials that is more advanced than the Hogwarts curriculum, Reparifarge~'
