Walsburn Bridge

﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌

Walburn Bridge was made out of masonry rocks bound with the mortar. It was paved with cobblestone above it.

Four arches of the bridge that spanned the Verlem River had enough vertical clearance and width that allowed the wooden riverboats to pass beneath it.

On the other side of the Walburn Bridge was the walls of Llyne town that had an imposing height when one could observe up close.

The town's gate was made of hardwood and reinforced with iron plates to increase its durability from ramming attacks. Each side had lofty towers to strengthen the gate's defensive capabilities against enemies.

The walls that enclosed the Llyne Town had fortified towers and ramparts which had embrasures on their battlements that protect the longbowmen patrolling on the walls' perimeter, allowing them to shoot a volley of arrows to the intruders without worrying to be injured by projectiles.

The defensive fortifications of the town were impenetrable, unless by using siege weapons to destroy it.

In front of the town's gate, a merchant caravan of a dozen covered wagons was lined up orderly. These wagons were pulled by a pair of horses and loaded with merchandise that brought from different towns of the county.

The contents of the wagons from the caravan were checked by a squad of town guards to ensure the town's security against external threats such as an infiltration of the enemy within the walls or a deadly plague. These town guards were equipped with gambesons, kettle hats, and spears.

There were mercenaries idling beside the wagons and yattering with their comrade lackeys while waiting. They wore varieties of armor and weapons as their job was to escort the caravan and protect it from bandits and monsters.

A young merchant in his early twenties dressed in a black braided tunic was having a conversation with a middle-aged knight donned with a surcoat over a hauberk. Beside the knight was a young page wearing a simple tunic.

"Sir Reinald, couldst thee prithee did let mine caravan to enter the town anon? I am hither to deliver the goods did order by the Runningwell merchant guild." The young merchant implored to the knight named Reinald.

"Nay Sir Topher, thee shouldst wait. 't wast behoveful to gain permission from the lord. We already did send thy request. We cannot allow people to freely enter the town without a meet consent." Reinald's expression was stern as he shook his head.

Eirwyn and Aria dashed across the Walsburn Bridge as they saw the aboriginals at the town's gate. They ignored their circumstances and went towards the entrance of Llyne Town.

The town guards stationed at the gate were alarmed as they saw the strangers were about to go inside. They quickly lined up and organized a formation to block off the entrance.

"Halt! Intruders! Doth thee dare to enter the town yond easily? Guards! Capture those folk!" Reinald spotted Eirwyn and Aria as he raised his voice to order the town guards to stop them.

"What!?" Eirwyn was shocked by the actions of the non-player characters, this scenario was new to him even after playing several virtual reality games from the past.

The town guards pointed their spears as they completely surrounded the two. There was no opening left for them to escape.

"Eirwyn, what should we do?" Seeing the guards became hostile, Aria was tensed with cold sweat.

"Damn. We'll just stand still and see what happens next." Eirwyn was decisive in the midst of dire straits. He kept his senses sharp as observing the situation.

"..." Aria went silent as she prepared for the worst case scenario.

"Present thy names, who is't art thee intruders? Hmm... Thy clothing is very much peculiar, 't seemeth ye art not did belong to these lands is't not?" Reinald drew closer as he inspected at the two up and down.

"Uhm... mister, I am Eirwyn, a swordsman and a play... Ouch!" Eirwyn was about to introduce himself but his foot was stepped on by Aria to interrupt him.

"Greetings sir knight! I am Wren, an adventurer. This is my friend, Blizz. We are here to meet with Blitz inside the town, he was also an adventurer. Would you allow us to enter?" Aria gave Reinald a sweet smile.

When Eirwyn heard the word 'friend' from her, he felt his chest tightened.

"..." Reinald didn't reply. He looked at Aria with a somber expression.

The town guard kept their eyes on the two without any movements in their body as they gripped the shaft of the spear and aimed its pointed head towards Eirwyn and Aria.

Topher the merchant, along with his lackeys and hired mercenaries were on the sides while they watched Eirwyn and Aria's plight. Some ridiculed and mocked them, while the others snickered at them.

"These two art so nay moo brain than stone!"

"Our caravan hath't not wend inside the mure, these two wilt enter? I bethink not."

"Nah, the guards shouldst amerce those folk for their foolishness!"

"Ho behold fellas, yond bawcock wast wearing his braise thee couldst see his bawbling knob swinging beneath 't. Hahaha!"

The crowd began to roar with laughter, except for the disciplined guards. However, their expressions showed they suppressed themselves from laughing.

Even Eirwyn couldn't really understand the 'Early Modern English' — seeing a mercenary pointing on his crouch — he got the gist of what that guy was jeering about.

"Duck me. Duck this. Duck my life." Eirwyn was utterly mortified.

"Art thee very much aquainted with Blitz? Doth not forswear or else thee wilt beest did kill." Reinald gave a chilly intimidating stare to Eirwyn and Aria.

"Indeed, sir knight. I swear that Blitz is our close friend." Aria was not frightened, she even replied with a smile.

"If 't be true ye art an adventurer, wherefore I didn't see any proof of being a member of Adventurer's Guild from thee?" Reinald's expression was menacing.

"Uhm... I'm sorry sir knight, but we had not yet applied to any adventurer guilds. Blitz went ahead from us to this town and we are left behind." Aria gave an honest excuse as she calmly replied.

Seeing the young woman was resolute and didn't show any signs of deception, Reinald pondered in a while.

"Men, bringeth down thy weapon. Wend back to thy positions." Reinald gave an order to the town guards.

"Aye sire!" The town guards responded in unison. They retracted their spears and withdrew as they orderly marched back towards their spot where they previously standing at.

"Adventurer Wren and Blizz thee may enter, however, thee wilt followeth Niel so thee can register to the adventurer's guild. Niel, writeth their names on the parchment and giveth 't to Bartelmeu." Reinald allowed the two to enter then he instructed his page named Niel.

"Aye Sir Reinald." Niel the young page nodded his head as he got a parchment from his leather bag and started to write their names with his quill pen and ink. After that, he gave it to Reinald to stamp it with his seal.

"Blizz and Wren, prithee followeth me and I wilt guide thee." Niel smiled as he walked ahead.

"I cannot believeth 't! 'Twas unfair! Wherefore thee did let those folk wend in, Sir Reinald, they did wend ahead of us!" Topher was taken aback and protested to Reinald.

"..." Reinald didn't respond to Topher. Reinald was strict and serious knight doing his duty for his lord.

Eirwyn and Aria left them and happily followed behind Niel as they entered the town's gate.

"Nice one Aria, we even got a quest for the first time!" Eirwyn gave Aria a high five.

"Haha! If you didn't shut your mouth before, we might be dead now." Aria simpered as she gave him back a high five.

"Oh." Eirwyn was loss for words.

As the two passed the entrance and set foot to the Llyne Town a notification window popped out.
