With the disordered footsteps fading away, along with two people's hushed yet unmistakable gasps of surprise, the sounds gradually receded.
Amanda Smith silently picked up the papers one by one; there were many scattered around, so it took her a while. Just as she was about to pick up the last one, a pale, delicate hand reached out and picked it up for her.
Following the hand, Amanda looked up and saw Abby's face. The woman gave her a slight smile and handed her the document.
Gratefully, Amanda nodded: "Thank you."
She turned to tidy up the messy documents when she heard Abby politely ask from behind, "Are you getting used to it here?"
Amanda smiled: "I haven't done much, so it's not about getting used to it. The ones really doing the work are you guys."
