Amanda Smith didn't get an answer, and she didn't feel disappointed either. She didn't understand what he wanted to do, but his main intent was clear to her—he wasn't going to let her go.
Thinking of this, she felt a chill spread through every pore of her body. It was truly terrifying. She turned pale, turned her back to him without looking, rolled over onto the bed, a bed she wasn't accustomed to. The softness of the blankets made her somewhat uncomfortable. She stretched her hand out, pulled the covers over herself, and slept with her head buried under them.
After a while, she felt Samuel Johnson leave. The man's departure slightly relaxed her for a moment, and soon a wave of exhaustion invaded her. Her mind went blank, and she quickly fell asleep.
She was indeed too exhausted, she thought. Everything could wait until tomorrow. Even if she were going to the gallows, she'd still need to die with a full belly.
