It's so fascinating to watch Yan in his element. I think he's even forgotten that I'm behind him with his attention focused on his work. It reminds me of that night I found him in his studio, bent over on the massive desk, his brows furrowed and his eyes serious.
He's so different from the men in my family—or at least any of the Dons that I know. If you don't know who he is and what he does during the day and then you watch him spray paint that incredible masterpiece, you wouldn't think he's Chicago's Italian crime boss.
Apparently, the owner of the building commissioned him to do this mural after seeing Yan's other works around the city on free walls. He didn't tell me how much he's paid to do this, but I imagine it's a lot, considering the size of it—not that he needs the money.
