CHAPTER 91: A Complicated Mess
The elevator doors opened onto the familiar chaos of my office floor. The usual noise of ringing phones, hushed conversations, and the rhythmic clatter of keyboards filled the air, but all could think about was how grateful I was that I could talk to Via about my situation.
Maybe I could call my best friend Julia finally and tell her the truth without feeling like such a fraud every time we spoke and I had to lie. All my thinking flew out the window when I spotted Emily and Sarah, my office nemeses watching me.
Steeling myself, I walked towards my office, head held high as I prepared for their usual rude commentary. But as I neared them, something unexpected happened. They stopped their usual chattering, their eyes flitting to me briefly before darting away. Instead of the customary snide remarks or mocking laughter, they offered a curt nod and a mumbled "good morning," moving out of my way with an almost unnatural eagerness.
