Chapter 22: My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.

“My dearest Edmund,

It has hardly been an hour since our parting and yet I am no less wounded by the divide.

I simply had to write, to express the tide of emotions welling up inside me since our dance. For you have left me irrevocably changed in ways I thought I had long since grown past.

I thought I had loved before, but not so much and as deeply as I love you. Every moment spent away from you is pain so all-consuming, I fear I may never be whole again. You have shown me what it is to care and be cared for, and now nothing and no one else will ever be enough. Leaving you on that beach is by far the single biggest regret I will ever have.

You vowed to find me once your time in this accursed war has ended, and I wait patiently for that day. I know I will see you again. Until then, dreams and letters will be poor, but necessary substitutes.
