"How has your job hunt this week gone, Adara." The lady suddenly asked as if she'd cared all this time. Her sudden interest in my life seemed fishy.
"I haven't found any. But I'll continue with my search on Monday." I glanced at Evren whose eyes were already on me before retracting my gaze to my food. I've decided not to talk to him or act like he exists. I was getting married to his brother, it's only right I avoid him. I heard him chuckle but I didn't dare look at him.
"If you don't find a job by next week you should stop trying, after all, I don't see a need for you to have a job. It's not like you'll be using it anyway." I couldn't believe her words.
It's been my dream to be a model since a child and I won't stop now I'm close to actualizing my dream. We agreed that I could do whatever I wanted even if I was married to Dalton. The only thing I'm not allowed to do is embarrass the family and so far I haven't done any of such.
"She's right Adara." Mr Bancroft said placing his glass of water back on the table to wipe his lips with his napkin. It looks like he was done eating.
"But that is not part of our agreement."
"An agreement you are yet to sign is not yet an agreement Adara." She said nonchalantly.
"You have a full-time job now, and that is taking good care of my son and raising a family with him. Because I let you fool around for one week doesn't mean it has to continue." I stared at her in disbelief. I wasn't a maid or his mother to take care of her son, if he needed care there were other people around.
And who says I wanted to start a family with Dalton? Hell, I was still too young for that.
"Are you the one sabotaging me?" I knew something was off when I got rejected again and again and couldn't secure a job, not even as a waitress. And all this while I thought of myself as unlucky. She said nothing.
"Why would you let me look for a job when you will sabotage it anyway!" My voice was a bit raised and I didn't dare take my eyes off hers.
"A Bancroft can not and will not work for anyone. Making my son get married to you is embarrassment enough for the family and I will not let you humiliate my family more." She smacked the table and I ground my teeth.
I forced the tears that threatened to fall from my eyes back in. I wouldn't cry because of this woman, not this time.
"I hate you. I don't want to be a part of your family anymore." I shook my head. I didn't want this marriage anymore, I cannot be in a place where I'm being controlled like a robot and treated like an object. A place where I had no one to trust.
"Ha ha." The lady cackled seeping her juice.
"Meet me in my office on Monday Adara I'll give you any job you want in this city." Evren suddenly said relaxing on his seat as he watched the lady. A wicked smirk displayed on his lips. I nodded at his words and rose from my seat.
"How dare you defile your mother before her Evren?" Mr Bancroft growled and I scoffed silently walking away. I press my lips to suppress the rising rage in me.
"Don't you dare involve yourself in this Evren, you and I know the reason I don't want her to work?" I heard the lady say from behind me.
REASON SHE DOES NOT WANT ME TO WORK??? Was I like some statue to these people? My blood boiled at my thoughts. I knew if I didn't leave I might do something I would regret later.
"I did, what will you do about it...?" The dining room door closed before he could finish his words. I was so angry at myself, angry at everyone and everything. I didn't know why I thought I could ever be looked at normally, I've forgotten so soon how these people see me. The illegitimate child.
I headed back to my room. The only place I get to be myself and not try to act like some perfect robot. For the past week, I have followed father's words to act good and obedient but not anymore. One thing I hated was being controlled and I wouldn't let anyone do that to me.
"Are you alright madam?" Agnes stepped in quietly almost tiptoeing, I had forgotten she was in the room with me when everything happened.
"I want to be left alone Agnes." she nodded immediately and quickly stepped out of the room.
I was upset at everyone but at Father more. It's not like he wasn't aware of these things yet, forced me into this, promising me I could still live normally but here I am.
My heart felt heavy and I felt so unable to breathe. I've never been angrier in my life. This is not the life I wanted for myself. The tears I've managed to hold all this time dropped uncontrollably and I stepped into the balcony to get air while I cried silently.
All this time I thought I was unlucky, that maybe I wasn't meant to work without an idea the lady was the one thwarting everything. And it's not like I could talk to Dalton about this, he listens to his mother alone.
Getting married to Dalton is already frustrating for me and now I'm being asked not to do what I want.
I moved my fingers into my hair letting out a deep sigh trying to breathe.
I want out of this stupid thing called marriage, I don't want to be here anymore. I can't be a part of a family where I'm being destroyed slowly. I have no ally. No one to trust.
The man I'm forced to be married to is a freaking mummy's boy, he listens to her alone like a good child forgetting he isn't one anymore.
I don't care what father says about my decision but I don't want to get married anymore. He could ask Scar or anyone to take my place. I don't care if he was paid any money or offered anything by the Bancroft's, but I knew I didn't want any of this anymore.
Two large hands suddenly appeared by my side trapping me at a spot and I turned immediately to see who it was. "Evren..." His name slipped out of me. It sounded like a whisper. A breathless whisper.
Those pair of familiar silver eyes stared down at me and then settled on my lips. I wet my lips with my tongue as the memory of that hot breathtaking night flooded back to me.
"Are you alright?" I heard that deep voice once again. How long has he been here? Did he just get here? What is he doing in my room?
He smiled at my confusion, the warmth he had in his eyes the night I saw him was back. "Do you do this on purpose, Princess?" I creased my brow at his words wondering what he meant without a single word from my mouth.
"You act all tough, challenging my stepmother and then I get excited, happy I've found the right woman only to see you crying here?" He tilted his head closer to me and I pushed myself backwards.
Evren had been there when the lady did those things to me, and he had even openly offered me a job even if his parents were against it. My heart fluttered at the thought of it.
The smile on his face suddenly fell to be replaced with his usual cold and intimidating expression.
"If you need something, Princess, I'll be the right person you'll come to while you're here. Not even my brother can help you. Do you understand?" He was doing it again, Evren was at it again.
Not this time, I refuse to fall for his trick again. He dipped his hands into his pocket to bring out a white kerchief. Bringing it up to my chin I slapped his hands off my face. I shouldn't be this close to him. Agnes had said he was a dangerous man and that I should stay weary of him.
"Thank you for your offer Mr Evren, but I don't think I'll need your help for anything. Thanks for the job offer." He smiled but it didn't reach his eyes.
"Of course." He said wiping my tears away with the kerchief and didn't know why I let him this time.
"And I would also appreciate it if you stop sneaking into my room. I'm getting married to your brother soon and don't want people to think things." He smiled again.
"Alright." He said without another word.
"I... I also wanted to clear things up between us. I don't belong to you, whatever I said t... that night was a mistake because I was in a bad situation at the moment." I've wanted to clear this up for some time and I was glad he was listening to me this time.
Maybe he finally realizes he cannot own his brother's wife.
I stared at him waiting for a reaction, maybe a frown or something but I found none. His face was void of any emotion.
"And are you in a bad situation now?" He suddenly asked and I licked my lips. I wasn't in a bad situation, Evren wouldn't dare do anything to me here.
"No." He licked my lips.
