Too Much Misfortune For One Day

It was past midnight, Alyce was sitted on the top of her bed with a sulking expression. Her eyes were red from trying too much to hold back her tears that were threatening to fall.

It was dark, only the lamp by her left side was dimly lit, adding a bit of light to the darkness of the room.

In there, she sat sulking badly. Her messy hair was scattered all over her pretty and small face, it was still damped from the shower she just had.

Looking down, traces of water droplets both dried and fresh were spotted on her silky pyjamas. Showing that she had carelessly ignored drying her hair after coming out of the bathroom.

After some minutes of just sitting there and thinking to herself, a smile slithered her face. It was smile that held realization, a sad smile full of acceptance.

Reality finally dawned on her. What was she thinking, she signed up for this. Requesting to work for a stranger she barely knew, as a maid for that matter. Isn't this how maids were treated? So why the sadness now?

This is her job, not just a job but an experience and a challenge. She was looking for where to begin her life over again right? She might as well start from here. Face it, live with it, and flow with it. Till life takes her wherever it had planned for her.

A mocking chuckle escaped her lips.

Was she expecting to be treated normally? Oh stupid Alyce. She hit herself on the head. 'Atlast, it's serious now.' She exhaled harshly.

Pulling the duvet to completely cover her up to sleep, she slowly lay inside, closing her eyes to drift into the dreamland. Unfortunately the sleep she was hoping for didn't come. She twisted and turned continuously till she was fed up.

She flung herself up from the bed. With a light swerve, she brushed her hair back with her fingers. "This is exhausting." Alyce said to herself.

Tightly, she shut her eyes and released them again with a puff from her lips.

Alyce sat up straight. Since she couldn't sleep, why not stay awake and kill time. Besides, just a couple of hours more and it will be morning.

"Archoo!" Sigh, looks like her cold hadn't gone yet. 'Too much misfortune for one day.' She mentally mused.

"Aghh, I didn't take my medications." She just realized now. Alyce stepped down putting on her room slippers filled with furr, she squatted before the drawer and took hold of her medicines.

Turning over, the jar was empty. Alyce finally confirmed that this day was assigned to be her worst day ever.

Picking the jar up, she quietly left her room for the kitchen. On her way going, she had mixed thoughts. She prayed not to come in contact with any of them, especially Nadira. Her only wish was for her to successfully get water and go back to her bedroom, nothing more nothing less.

Thinking of those two, they might be together right now, who knows, cuddling each other to sleep.

'Gosh, Alyce. When did you start to think like that. Too much movies isn't good for you.' She shook her head sideways repeatedly, internally scared of her thoughts this days.

Alyce finally arrived at the kitchen, she hurriedly but quietly got her water and was about to leave when she took some steps backwards.

The dirty mess made by the bin was an eye-sore.

Out of spite she didn't clean it up well, but just lithered everything in the bin.

The unfinished food caught her attention.

She remembered that Alexander didn't eat much, despite the heavy pile Nadira had been stocking in his plate.

'Just pass Alyce,....mind your business. You can do this.' Like a mantra it kept on going on and on in her head.

Before she could complete evacuate the kitchen. "Urgggh!" She groaned aloud.

She placed the jar of water back on the counter. With a sigh of self reprimandation, she slowly walked out of the kitchen and strained her gaze upstairs.

The reflection of the light was showing by the small space below the huge door. 'He's still awake.'

Alyce immediately went back to kitchen, she opened various cupboards looking for something to prepare. Luckily they were some packs of noodles and nothing more.

"What? How come I didn't notice this, this afternoon?"

"Maybe I didn't check here. After I almost died, hmmmph."

She quickly took it and whipped up some boiled noodles.

Placing it in a tray with a glass of water. "Wala, done!" She giggled and immediately left for the stairs.

The moment she arrived at his door, she hesitated. 'What if…they were really together? Will she think I'm trying to steal her man?'

'Jeez Alyce! Not again. What are you even thinking? Lord how did I even corrupt my mind to this extent. Now brace yourself.'

With a loud inhale and exhale, she softly knocked. Her eyes were squeezed tightly and she she could hear the pumping of her blood to her head. She was dead nervous.

With a 'creak' sound, the door was pulled open.

Alyce immediately opened her eyes. Luckily it was only Alexander who was standing by the entrance and not who she expected.

On reflex her eyes moved behind him, roaming while trying not to be too obvious.

"What is it?" Alex voice brought her back to her senses, her gaze was finally settled on him.

"Mhmm, I….you…I noticed you didn't…. have much to eat…. for dinner…..you know…. it's not…..not good to sleep with an empty stomach…. so….I…I made this for you." She spoke breaking in between her words, the last sentence was almost inaudible as her voice gradually faded throughout her sentence still it disappeared.

Alexander's gaze landed on the tray of noodles she was holding.

"You should hurry up before it gets cold." Alyce stretched the tray out for him to take, but instead, he opened the door wide and got in leaving her standing there with the tray.

After much contemplation, she walked in following behind him.

"Shut the door."

"Huh, what?"

Alexander threw a warning glare at her.

He didn't know why this girl just like tempting him so much.

"Oh, oh, oh, I understand." She used her legs to kick the door close softly.

Which after she carefully put the tray down on the table in his study.

She watched him walk over and sat.

Nervousness gripped her hard, harshly rubbing her palms together, she stood there waiting for him to have a taste, but he kept staring at the tray of food.

"Master….are you still mad at me?" She asked carefully.

Alexander turned towards her. "Is that why you made this?"

"No, you didn't have much to eat earlier so I thought…" She ceased her rants when she saw him raise his hand to stop her from talking.

Picking up the fork, Alexander dug in. He showed no expression and just ate up normally.

'Here I was expecting a praise'

"I'm sorry master."

"Alyce."

"Mmm."

"Could you let me eat quietly."

"Yes, sorry master." Her hands flew to her lips, pinning them together dramatically.

Alex diverted his attention back to his food.

Alyce quietly watched him with her hands on her lips. The way he ate was so majestic and elegant. She could watch him all day.

By the time he was done she didn't even realize, until he stood and headed over to his bed before she snapped back to reality.

Quickly she picked up the tray of an empty dish and was ready to leave.

"Good night." With a slight bow she left, not even waiting to hear a 'Good night' too because she knew it wasn't going to come.

She gently opened up the door, only to be met with someone she was avoiding, standing right there.
