Vritra Type Sacred Gears

Hello everyone, our topic today is one of the 6 Dragon Kings and the Evil Dragon Vritra.

Besides the usual info analysis from the novel, I'll also be providing some ideas and possible avenues, because i am making this specifically for an author who wants to write a Vritra centered fanfic, he didn't ask for it, I'm just making this since he is reading this rants.

The name of the fic is called DxD: Reborn as Genshirou Saji by Feniurme. It only has one chapter currently but it have potential since the author is willing to go through the novel before actually writing his story.

Now without further ado, let's get started:

1-Base form:

> [We put every Vritra-type Sacred Gear on him.]

> You guys did something so reckless like that.....

> I just made a forced smile and the Vice-Governor-san continues.

> [When Vritra was exterminated and then sealed into the Sacred Gear, he had his soul split into many layers. Because of that, there are many Vritra-type Sacred Gear possessors. But if you were to group them, there are four types of [Absorption Line], [Blaze Black Flare], [Delete Field], and [Shadow Prison]. These Sacred Gears were hidden within each possessor and had some differences. And our organisation, Grigori, retrieved them and put the Vritra-type Sacred Gears that we kept into Saji-kun. Being in contact with you resulted in Vritra's consciousness to slowly appear, so Azazel predicted that all of the Vritra-type Sacred Gears might be able to become one.]

> I see, that's why Sensei took Saji with him.

> [As a result, the Sacred Gears combined and Vritra's consciousness was revived. -But it seems like it became berserk because it only revived just now. But it seems like Saji-kun's consciousness is still in there, so he should respond if you talk to him through Ddraig. So I leave the rest to you. > [My name is Vritra. I am a Dragon hailed as one of the Dragon Kings. I request a duel with the Red Dragon Emperor Ddraig.]

> That was...an invitation to a duel. Upon hearing such words, Ddraig delivered a hearty laugh from within my body.

> [...So you've given me your name, Vritra. Kukuku, it's been a long time since anyone has given their name directly in front of me. Alright, partner. We've gone past the point of no return.]

> Ddraig fearlessly declared.

> [—Since another Dragon has given me their name, then I cannot retreat as a fellow Dragon. We must fight until one of us falls!]

> Ddraig's roar rang out across the sky!

> [My name is Ddraig! I am a Dragon hailed as one of the Heavenly Dragons! I accept the challenge of Prison Dragon Vritra!]--Volume DX4, Line Max VS Life Max

I have to say, despite my misgivings with the Fallen, they are ruthless as all hell, and I admire that. Who want to bet on how many innocent people got killed and have their Sacred gear extracted by Grigori?

But that's not our topic for this rant, so let's go back to Topic.

Vritra, known as the Prison Dragon and the Black Dragon King, is one of the Formerly 6 Dragon Kings and Evil Dragon who was a part of the Asura that faced against Indra.

Upon his death at the hands of the War God, who according to legends killed him with a sword made of bubbles( I shit you not, that's the actual myth, Indian epics are wild), got taken by the Biblical God and divided into who knows how many Sacred gear.

Now generally speaking, no being can survive their souls getting their Soul fractured into who knows how many piece, but Vritra is an Evil Dragon, and like most Evil Dragon, they are notorious for having incredibly strong souls.

Most Evil Dragons tend to be able to revive themselves if just a fragment of their Soul survives. They are annoying like that.

But back to Vritra, despite being divided into many Sacred gears, they all are just 4 type of Sacred gears, repeated many times, like the fact there are multiple Blade Blacksmith or Twilight Healing.

These 4 types are:

●Absorption Line: Saji's original Sacred Gear, taking form as a deformed lizard on his right hand. It has the ability to stretch out its tongue, attaching to and absorbing the power of whoever it is wrapped to, something that even an Excalibur couldn't sever:

> Sacred Gear! I see! So Saji is a Sacred Gear possessor as well! So if that is connected to you, you continue to have your power absorbed! And you can't even cut it with a holy-sword! Now I don't feel like fighting against Saji...

> Freed tried to take it off again with his holy-sword, but there wasn't a scratch on Saji's Sacred Gear. Is it the type you can't damage with physical swords? And did he say Dragon-type? That lizard is a Dragon!? I don't understand it, but that's a nice Sacred Gear!--Volume 3, Life 3, Part 4

With some training, it manifested instead as a black snake around his arms that can create multiple lines instead of just one. Here are its different uses:

☆Absorption Line used as a rope to fling an enemy or object around and used as a whip basically:

> Then, he extended several lines to the furniture store, and hauled out a ton of large furniture from there and drew an arc through the air with them as he brought them right above my head! So he intends to bring them all down on me like that!?--Volume 5, Life 5, Part 1

> The moment Freed's sword was going downwards at Kiba...

> PULL.

> Freed's body was pulled back, and he lost his balance.

> "Like I would let you!"

> It was Saji! The lizard pulled its tongue back, which made Freed lose his stance!--Volume 3, Life 3, Part 4

☆Absorption Line used like Spider man webs to fling around, although it's kinda useless since they can just fly:

> Koneko-chan suddenly looked up at the ceiling ahead of us.

> "…Above!"

> What, what? As I followed the gaze of the surprised Koneko-chan—.

> Stretching straight up to the ceiling was a rope—no, a line! Descending from the ceiling using that Tarzan-like rope was—.

> "—Hyoudou! The first attack is ours!"

> It was Saji! He prepared to attack me while positioning himself for a knee kick! Moreover, there was someone on Saji's back!--Volume 5, Life 4, Part 3.

☆Absorbing Power to limit an enemy's energy and increase the wielder's:

> "Kiba! It's not the time to be complaining! Just beat that guy! The problem with the Excalibur can come after that! This guy is seriously dangerous! Just standing in front of him makes me tremble! If we leave him be, he will also cause harm to me and Kaichou! I will weaken him by absorbing his power with my Sacred Gear, so take him down at once!"--Volume 3, Life 3, Part 4.

> [Partner, doubling is dangerous. Now that you're connected to that guy's Sacred Gear, you'll have part of your power stolen by him if you double.]

> —! That's right, Saji's Sacred Gear has the ability to suck in energy from the thing it is connected to. Now that my Sacred Gear and his Sacred Gear are connected, doubling is dangerous.--Volume 5 Life 4, Part 3.

☆Absorbing Line used to transfer energy to Objects, to strengthen them:

> Saji fired a line at me from his right arm! Does he intend to suck away my power!? I was on guard, but the line went passed me and attached itself to a certain store's light.

> "Nimura! Put on the sunglasses we got at that store just before!"

> Saji and his kouhai took out sunglasses from their pockets and put them on! What were they—. Just as I wondered this, I immediately understood the meaning behind it.

> Kah!

> The store lighting issued a blazing light and burned me and Koneko-chan's vision! Damn it! They've blinded us!

> [They got you. He caused a burst of light for just an instant by connecting his line to the light and sending demonic power into it.]--Volume 5 Life 4, Part 3.

☆Absorption Line used to to safely connect Life-force to Demonic Energy:

> At that moment, I opened my eyes widely. Because Saji's Sacred Gear had its line connected to his chest— to his heart.

> —The source of Saji's continuous attacks was his life-force!?

> "Saji! You! Are you converting your own life-force…into demonic power!?"

> "That's right. With my low demonic power, this is the only way for me to shoot powerful attacks. I convert my life-force into demonic power using my Sacred Gear's ability. It's just as you see. I'm [risking my life], as it were."--Volume 5, Life 4, Part 3.

☆Absorption Line targeting only the Sacred Gear's wielder and not the Gear itself:

> But, why did Saji connect a line to not only my Sacred Gear, but also me directly on my right arm?

> [He wants to prevent your Sacred Gear's doubling ability from being restored and then flowing into him at the same time as he sucks away your own power. He knows that, if he sucks away both your own power and the Sacred Gear's power at the same time, his body won't be able to take it and will blow up. He plans to stop the Balance Breaker countdown and return you to your normal form instead.]

> What a complex Sacred Gear!--Volume 5, Life 4, Part 3.

☆The Line manifested by the Gear can be disconnected and tied into another end, tying 2 different objects:

> Saji released the line that was attached to my Boosted Gear on his end and then fired it towards my foot!

> My Boosted Gear and the floor at my feet were tied to each other by the line! I tried to pull it off, but the line was too firm and hard, and I couldn't get the Booster Gear free from the floor!--Volume 5, Life 4, Part 3.

> There was also a line connecting to my right hand, but…it wasn't connected to Saji's Sacred Gear. Rather, it seemed to be tied to something far away. Was this line connected all the way to the enemy base?--Volume 5, Life 4, Part 3.

☆ Lines do not interfere with each other:

>● Near the end of the battle, Saji's lines were connected to Ise and the rest of the other members that were battling, and I am sure all of you are thinking that 'Won't the lines tangle with each other when everyone moves around during the battle?', but at times like this, the lines won't interfere even if they touch each other. That's the excuse I came up wiDX4--Volume14, Afterword.

☆Lines strung together to act as a shield or as a fist gauntlet:

> Saji was already ragged. He was defending himself by using a bundled-up line on his arm as a shield, but he couldn't offset every attack.--Volume 5, Life 5, Part 1.

> Saji entwined a large number of lines around his hands, and he raised both his aura and flames to their maximum!--Volume DX4, Line Max VS Life Max.

☆Absorption Line can stay behind even if the user is knocked out, if they have put enough power and feelings into ot:

> What was this for? It didn't seem to be a very good thing, but since it hadn't disappeared along with Saji, he must have put a lot of thought and feelings into this…Saji, what on earth did you put into this?--Volume 5, Life 5, Part 2.

☆Absorption Line used to suck blood from an enemy:

> That's right, I used Saji's Sacred Gear to suck out Hyoudou-kun's blood little by little. —Until he entered a dangerous state. In order to continuously use a Sacred Gear, whose original ability is to suck out the energy of the target, to suck out their blood instead, considerable training and precise control was necessary. But, Saji managed to accomplish it."--Volume 5, Life 5, Part 2.

☆Absorption Line can absorb the power of a Sacred Gear, and a basic run down on its possibilities here:

> "Is that Absorption Line? If you're practising, try using it. Connect it to this Vampire, and if he invokes it while you're absorbing the Sacred Gear's excess, it would probably run less wildly."

> After Azazel's explanation, Saji showed a complex expression as well.

> "...M-My Sacred Gear, it can suck the power of the opponent's Sacred Gear as well? I thought it simply absorbs the opponents power and weakens them..."

> Hearing that, Azazel had an amazed expression.

> "Seriously, it's because of this that the Sacred Gear owners recently don't try to know the power of their Sacred Gears well enough. Absorption Line holds the power of one of the legendary five Dragon Kings, the Prison Dragon, Vritra. Well, this was found out thanks to recent research. That thing can connect to any object, and can scatter that power. If it's a short time, it's possible to separate the line from the owner's side and connect it to some other person or object."

> "T-Then, the line on my side... For example, I can connect it to Hyoudou or some other person? And then the power will flow into Hyoudou?"

> "Yeah, if you grow, the number of the lines will also increase. If you do that, the output of absorption will increase many times as well."--Volume 4, Life 3, Part 2.

Finally, we can move on to the next type.

●Blaze Black fire: This type allows the wielder to manifest black Cursed flames that are very very hard to extinguish. Here we have an example of what I am talking about:

> Saji Genshirou directed the black flames which covered his own body towards Bedeze. Those black flames possessed a strong curse. They were normally supressed, but as soon as he began fighting, his surroundings would be enveloped with a dense, cursed inferno. If the opponent was to be bathed in these black flames, their entire body would definitely suffer from a fierce curse and would be doomed.--Volume 21, Life Ba'al, Part 1.

> "I'm sorry, Heracles. Jeanne. The black flame of Vritra over there was denser than I thought, so it took a while to dispel it into another dimension. It has been a while since I made a dimension for dispel. –Just like the legend says, it certainly had an ability with a strong curse and grasping. Damn Vritra."--Volume 12, Life -1, Part 2.

> -He's trying to escape!

> But it happened when his body was engulfed by the light of transportation. A black flame appeared from his body!

> -This is!

> I then look at Saji-kun. He has regained his consciousness, and is glaring at Georg while lifting his upper body up.

> "...I won't let you escape. You guys killed my friend. –There's no way I will let you off the hook!"

> Saji-kun puts his hand forward with a deep voice. The black flame around Georg turns into the shape of an enormous snake, and envelops him. Saji-kun's Black Dragon-King's flame. It's said that it will continue being attached until the opponent's life has been completely drained. Georg takes out a small bottle, phoenix tear, from his pocket. But the black flame also devours the small bottle.

> "....Vritra's....curse...…!"

> Georg says that. The curse which he thought he had already removed wasn't completely gone.--Volume 12, Life -1, Part 2.

Yeah, those flames are nasty, seriously so, well they are just curses in the shape of flames after all, so that's natural I guess.

A curious thing to note however, is that the cursed flames have no effect only the wielder, in fact he can re-absorb them if he so wished:

> A [Hole] appeared beside Saji Genshirou, and the black flames which had just been absorbed were released back towards him. However, he returned the black flames to his own body, and then charged forwards for a direct attack.--Volume 21, Life Ba'al, Part 1.

Moving on we have the next type:

●Delete Field: This type allows the wielder to create an area where the opponents power is reduced until it vanishes. Case in point:

> "Ku! What is this fire!? I can't move! ...…Ngggh! My powers are being taken away gradually!? I-Is this the power of that black dragon!? I have heard that there is a Dragon-king, but don't tell me this is it!?"--Volume 7, Life 4, Part 2.

Sadly we don't have much to go off with this function of the Sacred gear, so whatever.

●Shadow Prison: This type allows the wielder to use jet black flames that can bind and restrain their enemies in an almost Barrier-Like fashion. We see this here:

> At the same time, the black flames immobilising Yasaka also vanished. The giant monster battle, not seen since Loki, was continuing fiercely!

> [Damn it! I can't use the flame barrier as effectively as last time against Loki...!]--Volume 9, Life 4, Part 3.

> "Ku! What is this fire!? I can't move! ...…Ngggh! My powers are being taken away gradually!? I-Is this the power of that black dragon!? I have heard that there is a Dragon-king, but don't tell me this is it!?"

> It seems like Loki is also in panic. Child-Fenrirs and mass-produced Midgardsormr are going crazy inside the fire but it seems like they won't be able to escape.--Volume 7, Life 4, Part 2.

Now to be fair, Loki did break out of the flames eventually, being a God and all that jazz, but still, let it not be said that Vritra and Saji aren't some of the most persistent bustards in this world:

> A black-fire covers Loki once again! Saji! Good timing!

> "Impossible! It's a fire-barrier which I have unsealed once already!"

> Loki becomes shocked, but Saji has a willpower that is about the same as me! So he won't give up that easily.--Volume 7, Life 4, Part 2.

So the effect can be applied once again if broken so that's that. Do keep in mind that all these abilities in Volume 7 are him out of control, so it's impressive he can manage thus much when Grigori pretty much shoved 3 Sacred gears into him and threw him at the enemy and called it a day.

Once again, gotta love how ruthless these guys are.

Anyways, we have covered pretty much all the basics so let's see his other forms:

2-Vritra Promotion:

> Saji's body was surrounded by tall, black flames. And then, the flames began to spread outward and grew increasingly bigger in size.

> "Vritra Promotion!"

> The flames reached up into the sky! The jet-black flames gradually shaped into a body, forming a long, serpentine, oriental dragon.

> Roar!

> The massive black Dragon roared, facing the Kyuubi leader. Saji had successfully transformed into the Dragon King. The black flames arranged themselves into a magic circle and began releasing a dark cloudy aura. It is said that there are many strange components to Vritra's powers, and some of them were used to great effect during the battle against Loki.--Volume 9, Life 4, Part 3.

Vritra Promotion is based on the Queen Promotion of the Pawn pieces. It allows Saji to transform into a knock-off version of the Dragon King Vritra. It basically just comes with the benefits of turning into a giant and being able to use all his abilities enchanted and simultaneously.

Now to understand this, we have to talk more about Vritra, or well, were he stands in power:

> [Vritra had more special abilities rather than direct attacks. His power might be weak among the Dragon-Kings, but in terms of diversity and variety of techniques he is the best among the Dragon-Kings!]--Volume 7, Life 4, Part 2.

As we can see, Vritra lacks in terms of simple straightforward fire power, but he has many tricky and annoying techniques in exchange. This translates to Saji's Vritra Promotion too.

This here is just me speculating, but if Saji can just get an Ophis snake or snakes for each of his sacred gears, he will very much be bumped up into the Top 20 or Top 30 of DxD.

Remember, according to the Hero Faction, Azazel and Ajuka, an Ophis snake can be wrapped around a Sacred Gear in order to stimulate its potential to achieve Balance Breaker.

Besides that, Ophis' snake generally tend to focus on enchanting the firepower of an individual, so I say that Saji and Vritra are some of the best possible benefactors from it.

But to be fair, when talking about this we have to talk about Saji's potential and his way of holding the Sacred gears.

Generally speaking, Saji sucks ass in term of Demonic Energy, but he isn't as bad as Issei. He can atleast use Barrier and Teleportation magic, unlike Issei. So while he can't ever focus on magic as a main carrier, he can use some mundane spells.

Besides this, there is also another thing I noticed that some people are either asking or misinformed about, and that is the matter of why isn't Saji considered a Longinus wielder? Now I know it sounds obvious to some readers, and it's is, but we should all know that some of the fandom is just hopeless in regards of basic thinking or research so let's just address this:

> [That would most likely have zero possibility. To begin with, adding Sacred Gears is a dangerous action, and you can die if it goes wrong. But for this case, since you and Saji-kun are friends, and since you two understand each other, Vritra's soul was able to revive with a miracle. But it will be hard for the same phenomenon to occur in the same way. By the way, even if a new power is added, the evil-piece sleeping inside him won't change. The basic base is [Absorption Line] after all. The stats of his base body won't change that much as well.]--Volume 7, Life 4, Part 2.

This is the basic problem of why Saji isn't considered a Longinus wielder. At its core, the 4 Sacred gears are just coexisting together but are not considered fused.

No, to call it coexistence is being generous, its basically Saji just using the Absorption Line as the main Sacred gear, and the other 3 are linked to it as Support gadgets, ironically enough.

So, to achieve a Longinus, you have to fuse these 4 Sacred gears, or have one of them devour the other 3, whichever works I guess.

Moving on, we have the final piece of this rant.

3-X-Side Balance Breaker:

> [ "Balance Break!!" ]

> The black aura explodes, and the one that appears is my pal that is covered in jet-black armour! He has lots of tentacles-like things growing out from his armour and they have jet-black flames ignited.

> Saji who has just reached Balance Breaker shouts.

> [—"Malebolge Vritra Promotion". I—no, we who are like the flames of Hell. Which one is stronger between our black flames and your purifying purple flames? Let's have a battle to decide it!]

> Saji's voice is mixed with Vritra's. Now I understand, those two fused! They were able to reach it because the thoughts of those two became one! So there's also a Balance Breaker like this!?--Volume 17, Life 4, Part 2.

So, remember when I said that the Sacred gears weren't fused? Well that is still true, its just that this Sacred gear is the manifesting of all their Balance Breaker together, and if you remember the Sacred Gear rant, X-Side Balance Breaker is one that have pretty much nothing to do with the base Gear, which is the Absorption Line in this case, so that's that.

Now let's see some feats with this Balance Breaker:

> The Evil Dragons attack him—but the many tentacles on Saji's armour captures them! The moment they are caught by the tentacles, the Evil Dragons get all of their aura sucked out and they turn to dust.

> So many curses which are visible with my eyes appear around Saji and they spread through the whole atmosphere!

!_ Shinra-fukukaichou says it fearfully.

> "...The Balance Breaker which has that many curses...! You will get cursed to death if you approach it carelessly!"--Volume 17, Life 4, Part 2.

If memory serves right, those Evil Dragons are Mid-class in power, maybe near High class if you want to walk them. So that's a pretty good indicator of how strong the curses are. Besides that, we have:

> [Your purple flames and my black flames! Let's decide which one is superior!]

> "Interesting, interesting indeed!"

> Saji and Walburga who happily accepts his challenge start a battle of fire versus fire up in the air!--Volume 17, Life 4, Part 2.

As we can see, his flames in this state are able to keep up with the Holy Flames of Incinerate Anthem, something which he was struggling with before. We also have this:

> Saji fearlessly continued to release vast black flames! So long as it hit, the curse would take effect, and the flames which never died out would burn the opponent! Alternatively, it could also drain the strength of the opponent!--Volume 19, Life 3, Part 3.

> Saji Genshirou's armour regenerated after it was broken, after which it would be broken and restored again, and that cycle repeated itself--Volume 21, Life Ba'al, Part 1.

So we have a description of the flames and the fact that his armor can regenerate if it takes damage, just like Scail Mail of the Heavenly Dragons, since all of their armors is just made of the Dragon's aura:

> He had already equipped his armor. And I — also equipped my crimson armor along the way. A crimson Heavenly Dragon — confronted a jet-black Dragon King. The space between the two of us had already begun to distort under pressure, and the very air that we stood in trembled.--Volume DX4, Line Max VS Life Max.

So yeah, that's that, there is nothing to add other than once simple fact, Saji's nature as an Evil Dragon:

> Little by little, Saji gradually began to show signs of movement, and he slowly stood up. His expression was hollow, and it didn't seem as though he had regained consciousness at all... ...Indeed, Saji should've already lost consciousness. He had already endured so many blows. Yet, in the depths of Saji's swollen eyes — a flame ignited. A grand conflagration of black flames ignited across Saji's entire body and re-formed his armor.

> At that moment, I heard Vritra's voice.

> [...I see, so you'll stand up, my avatar. Even if your consciousness is blurred, you're still an Evil Dragon. That being the case, you should take a good look, Sekiryuutei! Hyoudou Issei and Ddraig!]

> Vritra's roar echoed through the sky. The cold-mannered Vritra unveiled his emotions.

> [We are Evil Dragons! Even if half our bodies are destroyed, and even if we fall unconscious! We will rely on obsession, and act upon that singular purpose! We are strong enough to stand in the way of a Heavenly Dragon!]

> Black flames and aura like none I had ever seen before billowed all over Saji's body. Seeing his appearance, I made up my mind and strengthened my resolve.

> "...Yeah, I know. It's just as you say. You...that's who you two are."

> I spoke to Ravel through the transceiver on my ear.

> "Ravel, can you hear me?"

> [Yes, go ahead.]

> "I'm going to apologise in advance. I'm going to use Dragon Deification even though we might need it in the second half of the match."--Volume DX 4, Line Max VS Life MAX

See, this is why everyone and their mother hates Evil Dragons, they are just so God damn persistent, every single one of them have a Shounen Main Character level of determination, and as all shounen villains can testify, that's annoying as fuck to fight.
