“No, Daniel. You are special.” Paulo looked into his eyes and Daniel waited for the hitch in his breath, the kick in his stomach, but none came. “I think things started to go wrong for us both when you left me.” Daniel huffed a small laugh at the idea that heleft Paulo, but the man took no notice. “My work suffered because I missed you so.”
“Or because it was never your work,” Daniel said in a low voice.
Paulo ignored the comment and continued. “Now everything is off. No one appreciates the contributions I’ve made. The university even wants me to take time away.”
“You mean you got caught sleeping with your students and you had to take a long sabbatical?” asked Daniel without a hint of surprise.
