Chapter 24

“You know,” Karden said, the flirtatious charm infused in his voice once again. “I hear there is a going to be some type of rooftop shindig tonight. You feel like meeting me there?” After everything that had happened, Daniel almost forgot about Nathan and Eleanor’s anniversary party tonight. He managed to nod slowly. Karden gave his hand a quick squeeze. “Good,” he said, then started the car.

Before the bell on the door of Trace Rare Books could finish its soft jingle, Sury appeared at Daniel’s side. “What happened?” she demanded. “What did he want? What did he say? Did you tell him to get lost? Tell methat you told him to get lost.”

Daniel raised his palms in an effort to slow her barrage of questions. “Nothing happened,” he said in as assuring a voice as he could offer. “Paulo wanted me to work with him on finding a book and I declined. End of story.” He stepped into the shop and Sury followed.
