Chapter 9

Just in case, he bent down to avoid being seen when they drove through the Crime Alley because a police car in that area is certainly a way to clear the streets.

The Commissioner brought two more police officers with him and informed them along the way.

As they reached the beginning of Crime Alley, Dio convinced them that he needed to go the rest of the way alone.

The two officers who were supposed to guard me were dressed in undercover clothes and followed me from a distance.

When he got out of the car, Dio went down his usual path through dark alleys and got to the shelter just a little after Ma Gunn and the seniors had left for their business.

There were only two guards on the place, and they were both at the front gate. Luckily, the fence was not being watched by anyone.

After climbing over the fence, it was easy to get inside through a window and get to his room.

It was already dark, so no one noticed anything.

A blanket was over an object that he could see on his bed.

It seemed like Martin did a good job. So he calmly laid down on the bed and waited for good news.

Dio doesn't know how, but he managed to fall asleep.

"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"

There were sounds that woke up everyone in my room and probably the whole orphanage.

They sounded like gunshots and came from outside.

"What's happening?"

"What was that?"

"Let's check it out."

"It was outside."

It was Dio who was the first to get up and walk over to the window facing the front of the shelter, ignoring the sounds of kids everywhere.

Dio saw that the gates were open, but there were no injured or dead people on the ground.

A group of kids gathered around him and wanted to know what had happened.

A shout from the first floor provided an answer.

"Where is he? Where's Dio?"

The familiar voice of Dylan cried out.

The boys who were surrounding him cleared a path so Dio could run. But there was only one way to the first floor—down the stairs.

Dylan showed up in front of me and started to climb up.

"There you are, you damn traitor!"

Dylan yelled at me.

He looked like he had been through hell, with blood on his lip, dirty and bloody clothes, a bruised right eye, and a broken nose.

It was clear that he had been in a fight.

"What are you talking about, Dylan?"

Dio asked as he slowly tried to figure out how to go down the stairs.

"There's no point in saying anything else, you traitor! I know it's somehow you who sold us out to Batman and the police!"

"Are you out of your mind? How could a kid contact Batman?"

Dio asked as he walked toward a small plastic pot for plants against the wall.

"I told you there's no point in saying anything. You, brat, I saw it with my own eyes when the Batman took the necklace from Ma Gunn's neck and said it didn't belong to her."

'Batman cleverly set me up. He even allowed him to escape. There's no point in trying to justify himself- he wouldn't listen.'

Luckily, he was now close to the small clay pot with the plant, and Dio kicked it with all his strength.

The pot flew towards Dylan's face, but to his surprise, he didn't flinch but raised a hand with a gun aimed right at him.

"Bang!"

The sound of the shot and the impact of the pot happened at the same time. He ducks as the pot hits him in the head, but he missed.

"AHHHHHHHHHH!"

A person behind me screamed.

Dio turned around and saw that one of the kids had been shot in the hand. The kid was screaming in pain as he lay on the ground. He forgot that they were after him, but he couldn't do anything else.

He wouldn't die from a shot to the hand, but Dylan would regain his senses in a few seconds. So, ignoring the pain in his leg from kicking the pot, Dio ran past him towards the stairs.

"You damn bastard!"

Dylan shouted after me.

As he went down the stairs, he heard the sound again, and a second later, Dio felt the result.

"AHHHHHHH!"

This time, the bullet hit his shoulder from behind, and he was screaming in pain.

Dio tripped and fell down the stairs, feeling each step. He screamed even more when he was hit in the shoulder.

"I finally got him!"

Dylan shouted in sheer delight.

"Dylan. What the hell are you doing?"

Someone in a crowd yelled in response.

Dio lifted his head from the floor and saw one of the older kids who yelled at Dylan, probably one of the ones left to guard the gates.

"Shut up, Rodriguez."

After yelling back, Dylan ignored him and walked slowly toward me.

The pain in his shoulder was unbelievable; Dio had never experienced anything like it.

But thanks to a surge of adrenaline, Dio managed to get up, but only to receive a blow to the back of my head from the gun.

Dio must have lost consciousness for a few seconds.

He woke up after Dylan knocked him to the ground, left him lying on his back, and stared up at him.

He pointed the gun at me again and smiled madly.

"Click!"

The gun was out of bullets.

"Damn,"

Dylan muttered and tossed it aside.

"It doesn't matter. It'll be more enjoyable to do this with my bare hands."

Then he lunges and grabs me by the throat with both hands.

This fully woke him up, and Dio grabbed his wrists, tried to push him away, and his legs hitting on the floor.

Dio's resistance seems to amuse him, and he tightens his grip around his neck even more.

The pain and lack of air make Dio forget about the shoulder wound.

After a few seconds, Dio's vision starts to blur, but not enough that he doesn't notice his smile.

'I'm dying, and I realize it. But I'm also angry. Angry that I'm dying at the hands of such a worm like Dylan.'

'How I wish I could grip his throat the way he's doing with mine.'

Then something happens. Dylan loosens his grip on my neck and gives him a bit of air.

The smile that had been on his face, filled with happiness, becomes strange, as if he's seen something very frightening.

Lying on the floor, Dio can't understand what's happening, but two shadows approach Dylan and grab him by the throat, just as he did to him.

This makes him finally release Dio.

After a few breaths, his vision fully returned.

The first thing he realizes is that what's holding Dylan by the throat are two bony hands that seem to have "arose" from the floor around his head.

These hands must be incredibly strong because Dylan started turning purple.

Dio doesn't know if it's from blood loss or from Dylan strangling me, but Dio feels himself weakening, and a moment later, he slips into the world of dreams, possibly for good this time.
