Soon, Peter reached his destination, standing on the rooftop of a building next to his target. He saw Mary Jane through the window, finishing a scene shoot and walking downstairs with a coat from an assistant.
From Peter's angle, he saw Mary Jane and her assistant enter the elevator and press the ground floor button. However, when he looked at the ground floor, the elevator, which should have lit up and opened its doors, didn't stop there, and Mary Jane didn't come out.
Mentally estimating the elevator's travel time, Peter instinctively felt something was off. Mary Jane had clearly pressed the ground floor button, but according to the elevator's movement, she could have possibly ended up in the third basement level.
Unable to use his spider silk, Peter, like any ordinary person, had to run down the building, knowing he was running out of time. He quickly called Harry while running and said, "Get to the third basement level parking lot quickly, someone has tampered with the elevator route and taken Mary there. It's likely someone your dad sent!"
Harry clenched his teeth and hung up, dashing towards the entrance of the underground parking lot. He should've expected this. A hard-lined man like Osborn wouldn't employ gentle methods towards a vulnerable actress. He would hardly sit and have a chat, more likely to resort to intimidation and threats.
When Harry rushed into the underground parking lot, he found it wasn't really a parking lot but part of a movie set, only lit up when used by a crew. At the moment, it was pitch-black, even without emergency indicator lights.
He could only run forward in a panic, searching for possible traces with his mobile phone's flashlight. Soon he heard a woman's angry roar.
"Are you trying to kidnap me?! I have another scene in ten minutes. If I don't show up, the crew will call the police! You're dead when that happens!"
"Miss Watson, please calm down, we..."
"Mary! Mary!" Harry immediately started calling out and ran towards the direction the voice came from.
Reaching Mary Jane, Harry looked at the people opposite him and said, "Get out of here, disappear from my sight now!"
The others were surprised to see him there, but Mary Jane was even more surprised. She turned her head, eyebrows raised in anger at Harry and said, "How did you end up here? What is going on?!"
"Mary, calm down, let me explain..."
"These people sabotaged the elevator and kidnapped me here. Now, I've missed my makeup time, which could cause a delay in the next scene. The whole crew will be waiting for me. I'm just a Hollywood newbie, this might ruin my acting career!"
Mary Jane was on the verge of a breakdown. She took out her phone, shaking slightly, and looked at the people opposite her, "No matter why you came here, I will make you pay. I'm calling the police now!"
"Wait, Mary," Harry reached out to stop her, "They didn't intend to hurt you, the situation is like this..."
"They didn't intend to hurt me?!" Mary yelled, trembling all over, clearly still in shock. She pointed at the elevator, "They hijacked the elevator and cut off the lighting, leaving me alone in the dark elevator for a full three minutes. I thought I was going to die there!"
Harry reached out to hug Mary Jane, but she pushed him away, looking at him coldly, "They seem to know you. I can tell -- they stopped talking as soon as you showed up!"
"Harry Osborn, what are you trying to do?!" Mary stared at Harry incredulously, "You don't want me to act in Hollywood, you don't want me to show up in public, so you use this despicable method to harass me! Are you my boyfriend, or a damn kidnapper?!"
"No, Mary, it's my dad who disapproves of us, that's why he sent people to..."
"Your dad, your dad, your dad. When will you grow up, Harry Osborn?! Who am I really dating?!"
Many people express fury and aggression when they're suddenly frightened, which is a form of human self-defense mechanism. It helps to ward off the weakness brought on by the shock, thus increasing the chance of escape. Mary was no exception, drawing from her fury to vent her frustration.
"I was trying to stop them." Harry protested, "I came here to protect you..."
"If you truly wanted to protect me, they wouldn't be here!" Mary Jane pushed Harry away again, saying, "Your father has gotten bolder and bolder because you're so indecisive. It's now escalated to him kidnapping me. I can tell that deep down, you agree with your father's expectation for me to be a dutiful wife and good mother. That's why you're opposed to me working in Hollywood and earning my own money through acting."
You Osborns are birds of a feather," Mary smirked at Harry, "Your father wants you to find a good and obedient girl, and you want to turn me into one."
"And me, I'll flip you off and tell you, to hell with good and obedient girls!"
Mary picked up her handbag from the ground, flinging it at Harry to push him back. She stood in front of him, looked him in the eye, and said, "Harry Osborn, we're done!"
With that said, Mary Jane, walking on her high heels, strode away from Harry. Behind the pillar of the parking lot through which she just walked, another slightly lean, bearded figure deeply sighed as he watched her retreating figure.
There was a small figure in his arms shaking his arm, speaking in an unclear tone, "Mom... Mom..."
The figure gently shushed, signaling to the redhead little girl in his arms to be quiet. Then he stood in place, watching a dejected Harry walk out of the parking lot, his weary face swallowed by the shadow behind the pillar.
After a while, he heard the sound of remorse from Peter at the entrance of the parking lot.
"It's all my fault. If we had stuck to the original plan and had only one person looking for Mary, she might not have been scared in the elevator."
"So why did you insist on us splitting up to look for her, Peter? This isn't like your usual way of planning." There was confusion in Harry's tone.
Just then, another voice echoed behind them.
"I think it's because, in another cosmos, Mary Jane is May's mother, my wife."
