Why can't I remember?

More than a thousand copies of this question floated inside my head in circles, eating up the other thoughts until he was the only one ruling over my mind.

This happened when I and Juli were seated on the lawn, making light talks. Juli's curiosity took over and she let the question, she had been bearing since her eyes laid on me, off her chest,

" umm-uh Amayra," she called

I sipped the tea, " yeah? " 

" I want to ask something if you don't mind."

" Sure, What is it? " I asked, taking another sip.

" H-how this happened to you? "

I was all prepared to explain, with my mouth ajar and vocal cords ready to enunciate. However, my brain refused to cooperate.

My flashback paused when I was waiting for Liam on the sidewalk and resumed at me lying on the bed, eyeing the white ceiling of the hospital.

I tried to remember. Again. And again.

I forced my brain. Nonetheless, it only disheartened me. 

Tears of frustration blurred my sight. Pulse throbbed.

My lack of response and tensed body language worried Juli. I didn't hear her calling my name until she shook my shoulder.

" What's happening, Amayra?"

I sobbed.

" A-Amayra, What's wrong with you? " 

" Amarya, say something! You're freaking me out!" she cried.

" I don't remember ." I let out, between my sobs.

" What specifically you don't remember? " Her breathing is unsteady like mine.

" I-I don't remember how the accident occurred. I can't- I can't remember. And I don't know why"

" Do you have amnesia? " 

"I don't know. The doctor didn't say anything." 

I sniffed, " I have never felt this clueless." 

" Amanda, crying will not solve anything. Pls, calm down." 

" I am sorry, you had to see me like this." 

" No, Amayra. Don't need to feel sorry for being yourself. I am glad you felt comfortable enough to do that in front of me." she says, " Do you want to talk to Mr. Larson? Will it make you feel better? Should I call him? " 

I said no.

" I just need some time alone, I'll be fine " 

" Are you sure? " she asked, unconvinced.

" Yeah," I replied, wiping my tears.

The night rolled around. It was ten minutes past 9 when I heard the familiar roaring of an engine. Through the window, I saw Caleb's car pulling over.

In minutes, there was a ringing of the doorbell. When I wheeled over to the living room, I saw Caleb. 

His eyes droopy. Hair slightly messy. Jacket hanging on his forearm. The tie loosened up around his neck. 

 when our eyes met, he smiled, and focused on Juli, " I hope she did not bother you much." 

" Not even a bit." Juli laughed, " Instead I enjoyed her company."

" I see, you two hit it off, huh?" Caleb eyed both of us. Juli and I shared a glance. 

" You both had dinner? " Caleb asked Juli.

" I insisted on Amayra, but she refused. Said she is not used to having dinner this early." she added, " And I want to dine with Grandma at home."

Caleb nodded, understanding 

" My driver is waiting outside for you. Go home safe.And don't forget to ring me when you get home.Alright?"

Juli nodded as a yes.

 "Good night, Juli."

" Good night Mr. Larson." 

Her gaze shifted to me, " Sweet dreams, Amayra. See you tomorrow. " she waved, smiling.

I returned her smile,"sweet dreams, see you tomorrow." I waved back.

" You had dinner? " 

Caleb dropped his body on the couch and breathed out, " Nah." his tensed shoulder relaxed, eyes on the verge of closing.

I went closer, "You need to eat, Andy", " And a shower." I added.

A moment passed by, and Caleb sat up, " Did you make a call to Dr. Jonathan? "

I said yes.

I Was told I had temporary amnesia after I visited Dr. Jonathan with Caleb previously. He managed to squish out half an hour to accompany me. Dr. Also added he knew the possibilities of the amnesia and was waiting for the confirmation from my side.

However, this time Caleb couldn't come with me. Juli did instead. I got my plasters removed. My first time seeing my bare legs Since the accident occurred.

It hurt a little bit. Bearable. unbearable was Caleb calling on Juli's phone every ten minutes.

The dude was more anxious than me.

Juli had to put her phone on mute to spare herself from further embarrassment.

" Don't tell Mr. Larson I said this but he is going nuts" She whispered behind me.

 I cracked up, "Our thoughts are mutual." 

" Seriously, Amayra.Don't tell him." 

" I Won't. Promise."

We Both laughed at that.

The doctor came back to the cabin after washing up.

" Miss, Amayra."

" Yes, Doctor? "

" Your fractures are healing. It will need one more month for them to heal entirely." 

"However, there are more things that need to be discussed. I would prefer if Mr.Larson is present when we do. " 

" I have had this question for a while, Mr.Jonathan. A few days ago when I called you, you informed Andy–I mean Mr. Larson about that. Now you're telling me he needs to be present during the discussion of my health concerns. I don't get it. Why? " 

" Because he is your legal guardian."

" what? " I asked in disbelief. 

" I guess, Mr. Larson hasn't told you yet…Miss. Mansfield, you were referred to this hospital for better treatment than the one, you were admitted to first." Suddenly I knew Who was behind it. 

I sat there like a statue, still processing as the truth unfolded little by little.

" Our hospital doesn't treat a minor or an unconscious patient without their family or legal guardian's consent. So, Mr. Larson signed the papers as your Legal guardian." 

He didn't tell me… He did not tell me any of that! I wondered if he had even thought of letting me know.

" He paid for all the medical expenses and bills since you were admitted here. " 

But Jenelia said that Liam- oh my god!

This is so messed up! 

I took a deep breath. Closed my eyes. And gathered my thoughts.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked behind and found a worried and tensed Juli.

" You okay? "

This whole time I was so dumbstruck that I forgot Juli was there the whole time. I put my hand above her as a form of assurance, " I am okay."

 "Juli, would you please wait outside for a few minutes while I talk to the doctor? " l asked.

" But, Amayra…." she peeked at the Doctor, nervous " I don't want to leave you alone."

I wanted to squish her in my arms. How can a person be so adorable?

" I'll be alright Juli, promise." I said with a smile. Hesitantly, She agreed. And left the cabin.
