Crashing into an Old Flame

"What if I say it's too risky?" she asked. "Then I will respond with—you are worth every risk," he smiled. ... With a troubled past and financial issues, Maxim Warner never had it easy. Coming a long way from a small town, he never stopped despite the hurdles thrown his way. Charming and aloof, now the hotshot neurosurgeon has no use for emotions and even less use for love. However, things get twisted when he takes a familiar blonde as his tenant despite the jarring red flags in his mind. She is the same woman who once held his heart within her grasp. But she crushed it back then and he would be damned if he let her do it again. He would be a good friend to her. Nothing more. End of the story. Diana Chen, an American-Chinese heiress finds her life flipping upside down when she holds an infant in her arms. A tiny life that she is supposed to protect now but it comes at the expense of everything she has. Nevertheless, on the worst day of her life, she moves to another country and decides to start a new life. And probably it is a good sign that her new house owner is a familiar face. "Oh my god, Warner, I almost didn't recognize you!" She ruffled his hair but unlike how he used to laugh or blush in the past, he did not react and the atmosphere suddenly felt strained. Let her take it back. The new house owner being a familiar face is making things awkward because the broody neurosurgeon might not be the beautiful boy with haunted dark eyes she used to know once. He is a man now... mysterious and stunning with eyes that strangely smolder her. And she is beginning to feel things that she should not feel for him. God, is it too late to find rent somewhere else? Maxim has yet to get over what the young Diana did to him while Diana has a baby to raise in her penniless state. Amidst this, the last thing they want is to look at each other across the dining table like the world lacks oxygen and their mouths are the only strategy for survival. When the thin string of patience snapped, she made a proposal, "Take all my firsts," As he looked at her in stunned silence, she continued, "I want you to take all my firsts. If you can't, then I can go find someone who will—" her words were lodged back in her throat by his consequent actions. _ When the mysteries from the past unveil themselves gradually, will the two be able to get over their differences and own up to their feelings? Or will it be the final 'The End' for them this time?

Information on someone

After dinner with Maxim, Diana went back to her room only to find Angel sleeping peacefully on the bed while Ivy was intensely typing away something on her laptop.

Curiosity got the best of her and she walked towards the girl, ''What are you doing?"

Ivy was surprised, ''I was planning a design for my game character. I have a long way to go though,'' she closed the window before Diana could see the designs.

But a folder on the desktop caught Diana's attention.

It was named 'Hacked'.

''Hacked?"

"Oh, that!'' Ivy glanced at the folder as she awkwardly laughed, ''When I was in my teens, I used to date this guy next door. At one point, I doubted that he was two-timing with me but then I was sure because he kept mentioning her. So I hacked into his conversation with the other girl and slammed it on his face before breaking up with him,'' she laughed.

Diana was amazed, ''That's cool, Ivy. You can do that too? I thought playing games other than Candy Crush was already a big deal.''

Ivy speechlessly glanced at her, ''It's not that much of a big deal.''

''Of course, it is—" Diana stopped talking as a thought flashed in her mind, ''Ivy, can you do something for me?"

Ivy looked at her warily when she saw her thoughtful expression, ''What do you want, Dee?"

''Information on a girl.''

Ivy was curious as hell but given the look on Diana's face, she knew that she would find nothing.

The next day.

Angel kept waking up at regular intervals the whole night so she ended up sleeping longer during the day.

It was past 10 am by the time Diana woke up.

The first thing that greeted her sight was box upon box of shoes cleanly arranged near the wardrobe.

She recognized one familiar box. It was the pair of heels that Maxim got for her... But the rest...

Diana thought he brought stuff for himself.

She cooed Angel on her shoulder as she walked towards the boxes.

She carefully opened one with her toes. A pair of beautiful blue heels.

She blinked, shifting her toes to the other toes. Green.

Black.

Red.

Diana retracted her trembling toes back to the floor, the corner of her lips intensely twitching as she looked at the boxes.

Shaking herself out of her stupor, she grabbed her phone and stared at the keypad quietly for some time while Angel busied herself with licking her neck.

Heaving a deep sigh, Diana started typing a number.

She called the number before pressing the phone to her ear.

Her foot tapped impatiently on the floor as she heard the sounds of rings.

It was not until the last ring did the call got answered.

''Hey,'' she was greeted with Maxim's deep voice.

''Hey, it's me,'' Diana said.

''I know,'' Maxim walked out of the emergency room and went back to his office room. He closed the door and leaned back on the desk as he waited for the person on the other side to speak.

Of course, you know. We have the same numbers except for a few digits altered. I personally handpicked that sim card for you on your 16th birthday yet you had the guts to say that our friendship was just convenient. Diana felt indignant every time she was reminded about it.

''Are you dozing off?"

Diana jolted back to her senses when she heard his words, ''No. I called you to ask... What the hell is this?"

''This?"

''All these heels in my room,'' Diana said exasperatedly.

''On that whole rack, these are the only ones that caught your attention,'' Maxim nonchalantly stated.

Diana gasped. Now that she thought about it, she did look at these heels for quite some time. But pretty things are meant to be paid attention to, aren't they?

''So what? Are you going to buy me the whole shop if I look at everything that's there?" she massaged her brows as she picked up the towel and her clothes from the bed.

''I don't see a problem there.''

Diana's jaw dropped. She threw the towel and clothes back to the bed, ''We only talked about one pair of heels as compensation.''

''I don't remember having that conversation with you,'' Maxim sounded bored at this point.

''You...''

''We are becoming friends again. Consider this an early friendship day gift if you want,'' he interrupted her thoughtfully.

Diana's lips twitched. Firstly, friendship day is nowhere in sight for now. Secondly...''When did I agree to be friends with you?" she pressed the phone between her ear and shoulder as she distanced Angel who had left wet patches all over her neck.

The girl swung her legs back and forth as she looked at her with wide eyes.

Diana pecked her lips quietly, waiting for the man's response.

''You didn't disagree either.''

"..."

''You are a doctor. Is it okay for you to twist people's words like that?" Diana narrowed her eyes even though he could not see her.

''I am a doctor. It's not okay for me to discuss about shoes during working hours. So unprofessional,'' the man muttered before hanging up.

Diana's jaw dropped as she glanced at her phone in disbelief, ''It's fine. Calm down,'' she placed the phone on the bed, forcing a smile on her face that disappeared in the next moment, ''He... He actually hung up on me? Me?!" she stopped acting up when she felt a pair of eyes on her.

Diana glanced at Angel who seemed to be giving her a 'What a weird woman' look.
