Chapter one

The world is lonely. People don't care. Power is the only thing that matters. That's the truth. And the truth hurts. My name is Remi and my life is so insignificant that no one will ever hear my story. My soul is broken. I can't feel anything. I can't feel happiness, or love, or hope, or even anger. Only the sadness and loneliness. I am in 8th grade and my life is almost over. I am dying.

My father went missing when I was 4. My mother abandoned me two years ago. I have to take care of myself on my own. I realize the government should have done something, but the truth is they didn't care. I wasn't important. But that's okay. I don't want to go to an orphanage anyway. I stay at the hospital most of the time. I am sick. The doctors say everything is going to be okay, but I can tell they don't know what's wrong with me. So I just go about my day. I do what people tell me to. It's like I'm a doll who can't control my own life. And I feel..... empty.

I am currently staying in alleyways and any form of shelter I can find. I have to steal from stores to get the things I need. I don't interact with people, I don't make a scene, and I don't go to school either. As far as the world is concerned, I don't exist.

What I meant by I was dying is that ever since I was little the docters told me that my body was weak. I am suffering from an unknown virus and there is nothing I can do about it. The virus took away my emotions. Since the day i was born I have never cried, laughed, smiled, or felt any other emotion. I am not sure how much time I have left but I hope I die soon. I am running low on food and I'm starving. Last time I stole food I almost got caught.

Right now I am up in a large tree eating the last loaf of bread I had.

"Hey you!" a boy about my age was shouting below the tree with a couple of his friends, "that's our tree! Get out!"

"Last time I checked this is public property," I called back.

"I don't think the message is getting across!" the boy smirked. "Get out of our tree or I'll make you get out!"

He and his friends began climbing the tree.
