“Fine, tell you what,” Todd said, looking at the floor for a few beats before he raised his chin and met her gaze again. He took a few steps. “Come with us, search through everything we have.” He held both hands up and out. “Start now, if you’d like.”
Captain Howard arched an eyebrow and stood still. She seemed to be considering Todd’s words. Finally, she turned, walked to the door, and opened it wide.
“Search them.”
Nick saw two uniformed men standing in the hall.
Todd turned and dipped his head at Nick, saying, “Without forgetting, he cantell the difference.”
“I’m perfectly aware of that, Mr. Ruger. In fact, I’m counting on it.” Captain Howard turned her riveting gaze from Todd to Nick.
Nick preferred staying to the background, and having the captain’s attention on him was unsettling, but her words didn’t even make Todd flinch, so Nick refused to show any disquiet. He looked from one man to the other before touching Todd’s arm with two fingers.
